Default Should I choose 8, 11, 12 or 13 ?

Hi everybody...

I haven't been playing Pop'n Music for a while, but now I am ready to get started again. My first game was 9, and I was really into both the theme and songlist. I didn't care for 10 however - don't really know why. Now I don't know what to get - since I liked the music in 9, would you recommend 8, 11, 12 - or 13 ?

Thanks from Soren

8 or 13.

8's big advantage is being cheaper. :p

Although I feel that 11 has some nice stuff in it as well.

I think 9's songlist has more resemblance to 8's than to any of the others'... but then, even that resemblance is pretty weak. So, uh, yeah, you might want to take my opinion with a mine of salt.

Any reason you're not considering 7? Not especially advocating it, just curious.

(For reference, I tend to associate them in pairs: 8-9, 7-10, 11-12. Haven't played 13 yet, don't know where it fits in.)

I absolutely love pop'n 13. But I feel if you get the latest pop'n, you'll feel like the earlier versions just feel, well, "old".

13 has an awesome songlist and I haven't had so much fun playing a pop'n CS game since 8.
So does 8 and you'll recognize a number of crossover songs.
I love 11's theme and the music goes well with it.
11 also has some of the best CS songs but so does 12.
11 has a very straightforward unlock system.

Many people didn't like pop'n 10. The theme was well conceived I think but the song list didn't seem that great. There are good songs but it's lacking.

If I were you I'd get pop'n 8. It's cheaper and might vault you back into pop'n more since you liked 9, disliked 10 and now want to play pop'n again. After 8 get 11 and play Scotland a million times.

I feel confident in saying that the general concensus around here is pop'n 8 CS is the best pop'n CS made.

The only downside of 8 is the interface. It feels fairly dated compared to 9+ and the free play mode is kind of annoying (to me at least) because you have to navigate through a menu to select a new song. It does have a great song list, though.

I went from 10 to 8. You can get 8 for the special price so it's a great deal.

The odd thing was myself having to get used to 8's interface. It felt alot smaller then 10's and even now I play each at different high speeds(the ones I use in 10 are lower). It's not a major problem though. I dont know how different 9's will be compared to this though. Still, 8 is a great game.

Due to pricing reasons, I say 8. Otherwise I would have said 13 cause of the songlist.

Probably. Though I think it's funny that most people here keep saying it's the second best pop n on Ps2....when the variety of music isn't as intersting as pop n 13 and the songs too. Even the notecharts to many songs aren't as fun as pop n 13's that I've played so far.

Soren: All your choices are good. Heres what I say about each:

pop n 8: Good variety of music and good difficulty ramp. This looks like the first pop n game that went all out on variety and decided to make more harder songs.

Pop n 11: Lots of good songs and the note charts for most of the songs are lots of fun. Nice that most of the songs are based on ethinic music based on the travel theme.

Pop n 12: Lot of people say 2nd best pop n on PS2. I disagree. This is probably the other pop n besides pop n 7 that I didn't have as much fun with. Theres plenty of good songs here, but the note charts for most songs aren't as well made as the other games in my opinion. Still a good game though.

Pop n 13: I haven't unlocked it all yet, but this pop n has probably the best variety of music in any pop n game yet. And the note charts are well done so far from what I played.

Thank you for all your answers - it looks like I should just start collecting all the games - starting from 8

Browsing youtube.com I found one song from 12 that seemed really catchy called magical voice shower - or something similar, but I know I shouldn't choose a game based on one song alone, eventhough I would probably buy 9 again just because of IN THE MOOD.

Since I have always been crazy about Dance Dance Revolution - I know that 8 will probably give me a lot of songs that I can relate to.

Since I have been out of the PnM scene for a while - what controller would you recommend today ?

I had a Controllica ASC that I really enjoyed - but what is the best controller available right now ?

Thanks again from Soren, Denmark

Any full sized ASC is fine as long as they are using arcade sized buttons and spacing. There are fan boys for the different controllers, but there are not a whole bunch of functional differences between them. We are talking about buttons and a box to mount them in.

Just look ask yourself what are you willing to spend, what kind of (non-game play affecting) options do you want, and what sort of material do you want the box to be made of. In other words, just get the one you think looks best.

Don't let the fanboys get you down.

Also consider when you want a new controller. The wait times for a controller can be unbearable.

You might find my reply in this thread useful. IMO, Ransais are the best (and the most customizable) but have the highest pricetag and the highest wait time. If you don't want to deal with the wait time, you might be better off getting a DASC, since they have stock at the moment (last I checked). Of course, you could do what I did and get a Ransai secondhand, thereby enjoying the best of both worlds... but you have to be VERY lucky for something like that.

7 was a good mix, and I agree, shouldn't be passed up. The music kind of chimes in my head like stuff in 9, so it might be up your alley. PLUS, songs are time released, and fairly quickly, so you won't have to slave over the unlock games
