[ATTN]Theming Rules

Ok, so i just happen to notice that when we switched over from 6.0 to 7.0 we forgot the rules. And since I can't remember all of them at the current time, i'll just list the one that i know the most.

1. Do NOT release a work° that is derived from or copied from another author, without their permission prior to release.

Let me tell you a story At one point a themer choose to release a theme that was nothing but an edit of a theme by K//Eternal. I can not remember the themer nor what he called the theme, but that's not importatnt. It used K//Eternal's metrics, most of his graphics and some of his sounds. Then once the themer was finished he released it to the internet. Because he was calling K//Eternal's work his own, the admins deleted the thread. Later he tried to save face by placing K//Eternal's name in the credits, but this acomplished nothing. The damage had been done. So from then on, we had this policy. - Work is defined as any Theme, noteskin, announcer, or any other usercreated content. Now with this comes certain exceptions.

If the author takes away permission, then all current pictures, download links, etc. must be removed. The author retains their right to change their mind at any time.

And remember that, most of the time, if all you need is a specific function or a specific graphic, you can ask and get permission.

2. DO NOT MAKE THEME REQUEST THREADS, IF YOU DO THERE WILL BE PUNISHMENT. USE THE THEME REQUEST THREAD.

3. Previous rule retraced, edited, and put back: Job Farming
Now Allowed to Job Farm, however, if you Job Farm, you must post more than "Looking for sum1 to maked theme. Need metrics." You have to provide all of the following:
A Description that shows what your project is to do.
A List of people you might be working with.
A description of the task at hand (Do you need Graphics work? Do you need metrics? do you need 3d modeling? Do you need music? do you need all of this stuff?
And finally, Post the Reward. If you don't know what the reward is, then you need to specify this.

3.9 (I made a funny) No Contentless new threads.

4.0 (I did it again) I don't like to repeat myself, neither do the other mods. If I or one of the other mods says something, listen to us. If you dont there will be punishment.

Oh yeah, and remember darklink87's "Dark Element" theme?

It was a poorly done mashup of Techno Fiend, Trance Machina, KatzeExtreme, and quite a few others. What happened to that guy anyway?

I want to know if it's okay to release a theme I made ( i haven't actually finished it yet) if I started with a copy of the default SM theme, replace ALL of the graphics, ALL of the sounds, and changed the metrics. what are the rules as far as that goes. (I just need the default as a guidline, it'd be really hard for me to just start a theme from utter nothingess) please help.

Modification of the default theme is okay. That's how a lot of people started out. Feel free to release your theme.

I would like to add stress onto the issue of Copying/Modifying someones metrics, I've witnessed a couple of WIP themes which used more famous skinners metrics, and think that its fine because its not graphically, absolutely wrong.
***Please please please, if you are going to use even a part (the song wheel, for-say) of someone elses Metrics, please contact them first clear it by them and credit them!

Metrics may be the hardest part about creating a theme!

I'm planning on editing the metrics how i see fit for my theme, but I by no means am going to completely edit EVERYTHING about the metrics file. especially metrics values that are already how I want them. this isfrom teh defaul sm 3.9 theme though.

Thats the thing, default SM theme is fine to edit, "custom" metrics are a no go.


And from what it sounds, you're defending this (not to smack you on the head with a rolled up paper or anything, but it's a good chance to specify) as a modification makes it you're work, tell me, if you took a famous painting, and drew a stick figure on it, does that entitle you for credit on the entire painting? Certianly not. But the SM Default theme is considered public property, so you can base anything you want off of that

But I'm not just modifiying the theme. I'm using it as a guideline. I will replace ALL of the graphics and sounds, although I suppose your right with the metrics, since it would be very hard to change everything about them. I'm still going to change alot of metrics though, but I do see your point.

IMO, topics should be about technical theming questions or project releases that are ACTUALLY going to happen, not planned projects for theming games that aren't even out yet. Requests (FOR THINGS THAT ALREADY EXIST OR CAN EASILY EXIST [not an entire new theme]) are okay too, I guess

Posting requests outside of that thread will earn you an infraction.
