Default Ripping/recreating graphics.

While I am aware of the Creativity Corner, I figure this would be the best place to ask.

For themes that are inspired from other games, do you recreate the graphics or rip them from disc? There is a certain *ahem* rhythm game for a certain widescreen portable system that I was thinking of recreating in SM4. The interface is fairly simple, but there are a lot of assets that are critical to the feel of it. Yet, I don't think I could make them myself and do the original game justice. At the same time, I can't seem to find a way to pull them from said disc.

I've seen one IIDX GOLD skin that uses assets from the official game, so that answers my question somewhat.

It depends who you are and what you want to do. I personally have a "no rips" i.e. 100% from-scratch recreations policy, but I'll attempt to present both sides of it here.

Recreations: More personal challenge (unless you don't like this sort of thing). Express your own style in addition to that of the original/inspiration. Recreating the look really gives you an appreciation for the original designers.

Rips: More accuracy, guaranteed. Higher quality unless you're very skilled at graphic creation. Saves time so you can focus on technical aspects like coding.

Personally I'd say just try to recreate it yourself and if it doesn't come out quite right, keep working at it... but then people might say you're unoriginal and keep rehashing material. *cough*

Doesn't stop me, I think it's a great way to go about things. It's up to you.

Thanks for the input guys. I can't seem to find a PSP ripping walkthrough, so it looks like this skin will go videoless. Not a huge deal; I'll just call it 0.99 when/if I have animation done but no videos. I also find that tracing each piece of the skin from screenshots is a fairly easy task for this style. :]

This one will get a proper release, and hopefully not break SM thoroughly.

My first google search returned at least 2 sites with tools and instructions to rip/dump items from a umd game disc. Good job searching.

I'm sure you can't point to them/your query per the rules, but I can say that dumping a game to .iso was not my intention, and that's all I can find.
