Default [SM][THEME]Pixelizing Dance[WIP]

Alright, I know I said I was working on a pixeled theme. I was, but due to lack of... motivation, I cancelled it.

However, after looking through the metrics and toying around with them, I realized that making a theme isn't all that hard. Its just some of the commands I'll have to figure out, but by looking at other themes such as System Zero and SM. Urbanized, I was able to realize what did what to answer my questions (such as putting a banner up in the demonstration).

A little background about some of the drawings and sprites, I used to rom hack Super Mario World. For those that don't know what rom hacking is, its modifying roms to make new levels, graphics, etc. Anyway, a few months ago I announced a new SMW hack in the making called "Alzo's Adventure" which featured a new main character I called Alzo (mainly because he looked like some weird alligator to me...) and his younger brother Rixe. New graphics and levels were shown off a bit, but I got little to no comments on it. The comments I did get on the screenshots were either "I like it. Good work." or were real comments. The sad thing was there were only I think two real comments out of the ten or so posts. I fixed the problems presented and posted new screenshots, but they got overlooked by some new person's crappy hack and dumb questions which eventually led that particular topic on the board down to the "crap" section. I lost interest in SMW hacking since then due to people being just dumb in there, but I kept my sprites that I made with that hack, although there were only two.

This theme utilizes what idea I had then to a StepMania theme. Alzo and Rixe are the two main characters covering this theme, although there will be other sprites supporting them.

STORY OF THE CHARACTERS

Believe it or not, I actually tried to make a story for the characters in the theme. NOTE: They will not be on screen dancers. If someone wants to make them dancers, please do so, but I can't and won't. They will just be present in the theme.

Rixe is a smart creature, although small. 23 years of age, equivilent to a 23 year old human, he has always been one to revolutionize things. Although he was kicked out of his hometown because of his brother erupting the sewage lines into the streets using Rixe's equipment, Rixe kept a positive attitude and after being catapulted in front of an old building, he decided to try and build an arcade machine that didn't require hand-to-button movements. He made a dancing machine in his personal arcade, and became a big hit. (This is why he is the main character of this theme.)

Alzo, 25 years, is a bit fatter than Rixe, but he is also more comedic. Instead of trying to revolutionize ways of playing games, he'd rather revolutionize how to prank someone. Due to the incident in his hometown, Alzo and Rixe were kicked out of town, and although Alzo tried his best not to prank Rixe while they find a new home, one prank went too far and threw Rixe in front of an abandoned arcade a long distance. Since they weren't given a vehicle, it would take a month for Alzo to get there, but once he saw that Rixe made a new arcade, he grew jealous and now wants to defeat every player in the arcade to reign supreme. (This is why he is seen with dynamite and whatnot.)

More characters to be announced later.

I'm sure you want screenshots, right?

Company screen. Not likely to change, but the music for it is very familiar to old school Nintendo racing fans. *hint hint*

Title screen. Most likely to stay this way minus the font.

The select difficulty cursors have been changed. Alzo with dynamite made me laugh.

Now, while most themes focus around high quality graphics, these graphics are all pixelated. Therefore, this will give the theme a more... "old school" look, although it will be more like Super Mario World old school than Chrono Trigger old school.

I have basic ideas down, but things I would like ideas for would be:

-Basic background - Other than the title screen, I want a cool pixelated background that would fit in with Rixe and Alzo, whether it be SMW-ish background or a map background.
-Colors - Player 1 and 2 are obviously purple and light-blue respectively, but I want some different text font colors and don't know what to make them.
-Fonts - I can't do fonts. I don't even know how to assemble them for themes. If someone could either give me some pixelated fonts or direct me to something that makes the fonts like that it would be appreciated.
-Foot rating - What should I make these instead?
-Sounds - No new sounds yet, but I don't know what would be good sounds. Obviously some NES sound effects...
-Music - The company music is a secret unless someone got the clue, but I don't have any ideas for any other music.
-Uh... anything - State an idea even if I didn't list it if you want. Just no asking for me to add in characters from other games, as I will prefer to handdraw sprites than copy/paste them.

On a second note, here are some things I do plan:

-Things not being done - Oni, Nonstop, Endless, and Rave are not going to be included. A bummer, I'm sure, but if I get enough responses, I'll reinclude Oni, but the others seem pointless... as I don't use them. The Select Music Group isn't going to be done either (since nobody cares about it anyway, right?).

Alright, now that I'm finished with this post, I'd like comments, questions, ideas, etc. For the problems you see in these pictures, its hard to see white in Photoshop with the transparent in the background, but those white marks will be removed. If I have problems, I'll post them here so I can get them answered. It beats making a new thread...

Heh, I should have read the readme first... I forgot it had a link to that. :P

Anyway, seeing as nobody really is commenting, I'll just post two other screenshots. Just remember that since SM saves images as .jpgs my pixelated work looks... crappy. It looks a lot better in game.

Ignore all the default stuff. Once I clean it up, it'll be better. This shows off the new style buttons (no couple, though...) and the single style picture. Small, I know, but it works...

Same as above, except with versus. Took me a minute each in MSPaint to make the sword and bazooka, but it looks hilarious to me.

I managed to discover more with BGanimations, as well, but nothing done graphics wise, so no screens of those.

And... ummm... any comments thus far?

This theme seems fun.

If you need help with something, IM me on AIM, I would be glad to help.

I believe Shift-Print Screen should save BMP screenshots, or something like that.

Anyway, it's a bit early to give much judgment on this... I'd work more on the background, since it looks like cheap Photoshop filters at the moment; since you're capable of good sprite art, you could try making tiles that you can build a BG out of.

1. Thanks.
2. You caught me. It is just a filler until I get a real background made. Out of making pixel graphics, backgrounds are my least favorite to do. I'll just rom hack SMW to make a new background and take it from there. Now to find my rom...

Hmm... not many opinions... maybe because there hasn't been much to show right now.

Anyway, little progress done. Select Style is pretty much arranged to how I want it for the time with only a few graphics to be done while the Select Difficulty screen is close to complete.

The arrangement of the style screen. Almost final... just some graphics to do.

Difficulty select screen. Pretty much done. Just some animations need to be changed and the obvious background, header, and footer. Info is a maybe still. Also, I am still going to remove Rave, Nonstop, and Endless, but I am still doing Oni. I felt it would make a good sprite opporotunity for me.

...and they weren't even based at all off of the baby Yoshi sprite either. They were based off of someone else's custom Rex sprite (which looked incredibly better than the original SMW ones, to say the least).

If you want to see the sprite they were based off of, this post has a screenshot of a hack with his Rex in it... just for reference...

EDIT: I forgot I redid the Logo background in response to k//eternal's comment.

Much better than before, but still not great. :P At least the Kirby and the Amazing Mirror title music plays here.

Oh, image quality is bad. My fault. :P

The menu text could be easier to read. Use Stroke, I guess.

Yes, it's overused, but it does add contrast quickly, which is good for important menu elements.

I'm still working with the fonts a bit. I managed to get some pixelated fonts today and am still deciding on what font to use for what. I knew about stroke as well, but whenever I used it the fonts became all black instead. I'm going to fix them soon, don't worry.

Progress has been slow on this. I kind of screwed up on the music wheel so I have to start over with that. There are also a few things I want to clean up as well before showing it off. I'm thinking of making the headers just a square box in a corner, like System Zero. Mainly because it looks too bulky...

If things go according to plan, I may have a very early beta released next week to where some of the things are done.
