OK, here's my question...

I'm modifying SM4's default theme for an event, and I want to change the sound that's played upon selecting a song....

My problem is that there isn't any .redir file associated to it, and the only sound that matches the one being actually played is Common start.ogg.

I tried creating ScreenSelectMusic start.redir and MusicWheel start.redir, without positive results . The thing is that I want to change only that sound, so I don't want to replace Common start.ogg

What can I do?

Nothing, aside from building a custom version of StepMania.

Ouch, that's not what I wanted to hear (or, in this case, read)

It wouldn't be a bad idea adding support for tweaking that, to improve SM's "themability" (new word :P )

Oh my, I'll try it. I'll edit this post with the results...

EDIT: it works pretty well, but.... the sound I pick overlaps the other one, not replacing it. Anyways, better than nothing :3

Right, it is the selector sound so you will have that, though if you could time it, you could inverse the soundwave for the select and it should phase out the select sound

Well, its sound physics, that is that the inverse of a wave and the wave itself cancel each other out. So if you use something like Audacity, it will inverse it for you and make the other sound cancel out with it. Much like how sound canceling headphones work. So you would have the select sound and then put the inverse of the select sound at the beginning of your sound.

OK, lemme try to see if I got this well.. (getting pics, updating soon)

Effectively, the experience works perfectly in Audacity. However, in StepMania it works randomly.... sometimes "common start.ogg"'s inverse does its work, and sometimes the normal file sometimes still plays >.<

Definitely something like (for example) ScreenSelectMusic start.redir is needed T_T

Default 2 theme related questions

(crossposted from the Stepmania.com forums)

OK, one is more of a SM related problem, I think:

The "Enter your name" screen (ScreenNameEntry) is terribly bugged: there aren't any scrolling input letters nor "inputting arrows", the music plays for some seconds and then it goes to ScreenMusicList... or even sometimes SM crashes. What could be the reason?
__________________________________________

2nd question... This is an announcer related question: If it isn't too much, I'd like to know the new known announcer triggers for SM4. I downloaded the DDR EXTREME (JP) announcer from Laser's site and now I'm figuring out the new triggers, but I'm having problems with some.
For example, I got to work the sound inside the ScreenSelectDifficulty intro folder, but for some reason the respective triggers for each selection (example, ScreenSelectDifficulty comment beginner) don't work
Any help?

EDIT: just in case, I'm using AJ's "unofficial release" since the last official one is a perfect case of bugs>features

Perhaps in the thing that handles the sound, you could put in a condition in that would make it not play on that screen.

Oh, and the reason why that doesnt work all the time is because sometimes the sound lags and then they intersect wrong allowing you to hear the sound.

Default Stepmania 4.0 Themeing questions

Ok I decided in the interest of ease of use, to condence all of the questions about themeing in 4.0 in to one thread. So make sure that you post your questions here, and when you reply to a question that you quote the question you are answering.

EDIT: And It didnt merge like i wanted it to, and i can't get it to reorder the posts in a good way so im just gonna leave it like it is.

So from now on if it has to do with SM4.0 post it here. Me and possibly AJ will be here to help.

(Good idea of merging the SM4 theming questions together, Laser, thanks.)

I found the cause of the ScreenNameEntry problem: playing EVERY SONG with AutoPlay. I noted that when a song is played with AutoPlay, no scores are saved, so if every song is played this way, SM doesn't have any record to display in ScreenNameEntry, making it crash. This is bad, since SM is being forced to always show ScreenNameEntry once the configured amount of songs have been played, insted of showing it only if there are any new records...
If at least one song is played normally, ScreenNameEntry is displayed as it should be.
EDIT: if there aren't any records after having played at least one song without AutoPlay, happens the 1st case... ScreenNameEntry's music playing for 2 secs, then going to ScreenMusicList

Bug? ScreenNameEntry misconcept? You decide.

Now, the other question... the announcer triggers .....

Another reason for ScreenNameEntry's short appearing: Playing songs with FailOff enabled <.<

Laser: huh?@ "Umm...Oh AJ!, YOU FIX, YOU FIX NOW. (reffering to the Announcer thing )"
