Default [WIP][Theme][SM3.9]dangerZone

[updated 10/07 - Named after old concept]

(click for larger versions)
ScreenSelectDifficulty - 60% done (course section setup is in progress)

ScreenSelectMusic - 95% done

ScreenGameplay - 80% done

Fun stuff:
- Portal added to song wheel
- Ability to switch between song and course mode
- Ability to select challenge difficulty from ScreenSelectDifficulty
- PaneDisplay, song length, popularity, etc.
- White/Gold combo for full marvelous/perfect combos
- ITG-style awards

To-do's:
- Change combo scoring
- Use percent scoring for ScreenGameplay without StepMania.ini
- Better understand sprites and/or 3D models in SM
- ~70% of the attract loop
- ScreenEvaluation + ScreenSelectStyle
- Better fallback banner + bg
- _shared bg is still boring

[original post]
My overall aim for this theme is to be streamlined, clean, dynamic (date/time conditionals? yes please) and functional for arcade and keyboard. I'd say I have a good grip on how to work metrics, conditionals, and BGAs at this point, so right now I'm just looking for some feedback on what I've got so far (I've begun the loading screen, the title screen, and the round failed screen, but no one want to see those). I'm in college now, so I hope I'll have some time to set aside and work on this.

The background right now is kind of obscured and plain, but I'm debating on whether or not I want to change that - the select music screen is already cluttered a bit, but more or less static (boring) after the initial OnCommands. Following the 'make mockups for the love of god' rule for any design project, I have made a few for various screens, if you want to see them.

I am considering porting what I have to SM4 and building from there. (edit: haha no)

That's quite a nice looking theme you have going there, especially seeing as this is your very first. Honestly, I wish I could offer you some good advice, but I'm not very savy with theming myself.

Keep up the good work and I'll be sure to keep checking back on the progress of your theme!

Try not to bevel so hard, might seem like a nifty effect now but it's a little loud, overused, and overall n00bish. Thumbs up for relatively subtle gradients in most places, and the main part of the songwheel, although I'm wondering what the yellow blurry-looking bit is about.

You'll have an easier time fitting in a BG if you make the border elements on the left transparent, thus allowing it to show through.

For the font on the upper-left, try something thicker, it doesn't look very header-ish.

Just a few ideas. I'm not sure whose "make mockups" rule this is, but if you've got them, doesn't hurt to show.

Possibly like a beginner tag? Something? Anything?

Since StepMania 3.9 themes are generally restricted to running in 640x480, I'd suggest taking a screenshot in that resolution. Only then can I give advice on how the theme really looks, as some graphics may be severely effected by the 1024x768 SM res.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've taken it into account and updated what I can with the time I've got. (see screenshot).

k// & Oni: The yellow part was part of each WheelItem, and I didn't really bother to change it up until now. The beginner tag is what you'd expect it to look like, only more pseudo-3D. =]

I'm thinking of broadening the color scheme a bit. I can live with reds and yellows, but I don't think others will want to.

What are you using to make your graphics?

Out of curiosity.

Alright, everything's in 640x480 now. Excellent.

Some of the fonts look a bit too blurry (mainly the musicwheel font, some numbers, and the groove radar labels; this could be personal taste though).

The MusicWheel is set to 170% zoom to fill up the space when there's no subtitle. I've noticed it's not nearly as sharp as it should be, so consider it noted.

The total time and popularity labels, on the other hand, are absolutely terrible and I can't figure out how to fix the font widths for the life of me. >_< I think the groove radar labels are using odd-number dimensions. There's 2 or 3 of those errors that I've been skipping through for a few days

Wow. It looks really really good.
Keep up the good work.

Though, are you going to move the arrow bar up more to fill that empty space?

If by the arrow bar you mean the receptor arrows, then yes, I have moved them up another 20px or so since these screenshots were taken.

Alright, cool.
I was looking at the screenshots and the empty spaces above the receptors were looking quite tacky.
Is there an overall percentage completion you could give us?
