Default Classic DDR OSC goodness - Old Results and Downloads

I just realized we don't have links to any of the older DDR OSC packs (including the pre-OSC3 group project release of complete sims for Para Para Mecha Max)... So now I'm gonna fix that, complete with my stupid and unneeded commentary!

Sadly, the OSC1 results have been lost to the mists of time - They were stored on my Datamachine account space, and Datamachine's now dead. Like a fox. There's some good stuff here, though, in a pure old-school vein before ITG was even heard of. (There's also some crap here though...)

DDR OSC 2 was the first one to be run (though only partially) through Bemanistyle (they hosted us, but we ran the forum ourselves) - at the time, we were solely HOSTED by BMS and did not in any way, shape or form consider the sites affiliated. This is also the first set where we still have the results, and I still play several of the files here.

Around this time, DDRei ran Tournamix 5 - Among the entries were a couple Semi-finalist entries from the album Para Para Mecha Max (including my own, Let's Go Gekiganger 3). A fun time was had, but then me and some friends at a small privateish site (including, though I knew him by a different name on this site at the time, Nifta) decided to go ahead and do the whole album. With the group's okay, I went ahead and released it as a sort of OSC side project just because these were some fun files (if generic - Eurobeat, Anime Themes, with plain-jane steps). The source OGG Vorbis MP3s as well as a ZIP of the Stepmania form is available here:
index

DDR OSC 3 was the first to integrate with Bemanistyle - to be exact, 6.0 - and also established the hitherto not-officially-stated SEKRIT JUDGE FORUM (which remains secret ). It was also the last DDR OSC to use Clusters as they had been used since 1, and the first to allow Keyboard entries and entries beyond what NekoIncardine could pass (even given I could pass anything up to a decent 9-footer, a retarded standard I now admit). It also had two songs that were so bad that I still have never released them and never will. (Yes, worse than Tunak Tunak Tun.)

This one was also the last to use poll scripts of any sort (though they were nice ones), with me going over to PM'ed ballots as an anti-cheating measure towards the end of the competition. This was also the first of a short period of sorta-nepotism in the series (and not one of my prouder moments) - anyone who remembers Virgo knows the more infamous example, but Cluster 1 was also done by MazriM TaiM with the help of Braki, another friend of mine (the two knew each other from outside of OSC or the online Bemani community - it's in fact Braki who introduced me to MazriM). I'm not proud of this and don't intend to do it in the future except where I feel the individuals are reasonably qualified to judge (as Kilgamayan). Might I add that since this one, BlueSS has done judge selection muchly personally to prevent this happening again. :P
One bit of good news, though, was that these ones had the best-arranged results. Honestly, this was my favorite mainline OSC overall. This was also the first (and until OSC5, only) version to have a Challenge round for those close to winning to get a chance to go on to the end (based on Tournamix 5's having vote-based semifinals, only better done IMO).

After that came the first and most general themed side competition for OSC, DDR OSC 3+. The theme? Choose remixes of songs from OSC, Tournamix, or Video Games (yeah, the theme was probably a little too wide). A few entries, a few judges, fun files, this one was kind of a casual pass-the-time type thing. Also of note was that this was the first (and I think only) one where the public reviews were saved for posterity. (Sadly, getting OSC3 or 4's reviews for posterity is no longer possible :/ )

Then came the first OSC to be the victim of Bemanistyle 7.0. For those of you new to the site, Bemanistyle 7.0 was in development for launch around March of 2005. Not kidding Delays, anyone? (It wasn't until mid-2006 that 7.0 launched, for historical reference.) Stuff happens, and I made my contributions to the 7.0 progress (the Album Database). Around May, we figured out that 7.0 wasn't coming for a while, and quickly ran what was originally going to be started on April 1st - DDR OSC Psychopath's Edition (original DDR OSC ~for freaks~ and/or DDR OSC April Fools). The theme here? HAlf your score was how funny the entry was. To get the full effect of a couple of these entries, play them in SM 3.9. Also, the results came right when YTMND was starting to get popular. And that's me singing.

Later in 2005, after more waiting for 7.0, we decide to go ahead and start DDR OSC 4 without. Ocerall a successful and low-on-drama competition (not too long after the Tournamix 6 fiasco IIRC).
This OSC introduced a few major features that have stood for OSC5 - split divisions (a godsend for keyboard fans), the current scoring scheme, and again, plenty of fun songs, along with behind-the-scenes use of Excel spreadsheets (made more obvious in OSC5). This one did not, sadly, feature especially well-organized results - I'll either fix those HTMLs to link to the judge results or link them here later.

Fast-forward to 2006, Summer. I'm working at Movie Gallery (thank god I left that place eventually), and we decide to start OSC 5 - only for, about four days in, the switch to Bemanistyle 7.0 to occur. Ah well, no big, we simply restarted the entries and saved everything else.

What was big was the incredible amounts of drama and shit that happened. Flaming of the judges, staff, other entrants, etc. hit intolerable levels.

There were, regardless, plenty of quality entries, a unique challenge round, and a few surprises as people made confessions about flouting certain rules. I'm not going to do retroactive DQs or anything over them, it'd kind of be hypocritical given I did the same in Tournamix (though from a different angle - still not going to discuss that). Also Tunak Tunak Tun, and judges disappearing, and general screw-ups happening (I can't even remember how many times I had to fix the results, and entries that progressed to the Challenge Round despite not being winners as a side effect).

And then there was one. With the end of OSC 5, BlueSS decided it was time to focus on his real life more (a commendable desicion), leading to me, NekoIncardine, running the last competition, or rather the beta of the next generation of 4-panel sim contests on Bemanistyle, solo. Not pleasant, as delays, idiotic mistakes compounding idiotic mistakes, but (thank you everyone) no significant drama marred the competition, which tested a workable, more efficient, but imperfect rules system.

At this time, the DDR OSC series as it stands is concluded on a decent if not high note, and the new OSC lineage is yet to start. As far as I know, DDRei's Tournamix revival has been a non-starter, leading to the creation of the Best-Mix series as the current largest competition series (alongside ddrextreme.co.uk, and a few smaller sites' works) - ironically, BlueSS returned to do those while I left to focus on other things in my own life. Maybe next summer we'll team up again, maybe not. OSC was one hell of a ride and I overall don't regret it compared to any other piece of Internet I've done over the past several years. Whenever I play DDR still, I still tend to bust out with some of my favorite OSC songs, and I still want to run one of my concepts of doing 'revival remakes' of a best-of set from OSC and Tournamix. Maybe that'll come in the future.

Sincerely,
NekoIncardine, AKA (As of this writing) Neko Arc Chaos Black G666.

I never even knew OSC 4 had a second DDR Bracket. I wanted to download it, but the link for it didn't allow me to.

What was the problem with Braki & Mazrim, tho? I remember them doing a good job.

Anyway, good times. I like the contrast between how my OSC3 and 4 entries did within their respective brackets (second last place in 3, then third place in 4... :P)

Haha, I remember when j! got all mad at us when we assumed his Psychopath Tendercrisp entry was YTMND-related.

And it's not even a decent fad.

My commentary with updates

http://ddrosc.bemanistyle.com/osc1/ OSC 1 original Layout and Results.
(Warning - do not use those links to download, as some of them go to porn sites now. The links on the left should be safe)

After being fed up with the disorganization and mess that was called TournaMix, I found someone else who was thinking the same idea, Voldwrath87 who was planning on doing his own tournament. Neko joined the crew and we came up with the name DDROSC (DDR Original Step Contest). I got some free site template and made the site. We had a nice turnout for a new, unadvertised, unplanned contest. Voldwrath87 left before it really started, Neko and I judged, and life was simple.

http://ddrosc.bemanistyle.com/osc2/ OSC 2 Original Site and Final Results
http://ddrosc.bemanistyle.com/osc2/osc2courses.zip Fan-Made Courses

This time we upgraded and got a .tk domain and a red layout that matches 7.0's pretty well. This was the first simfile contest to have a (somewhat) tangable prize. Shuey offered to donate a pack of his simfile collection, and a pack of MJEmirzian & Udderdude files was the prize. Yes, one of the guys who now writes ITG steps. Anyways, that was a weird prize, we had better entries all around, and even a shoutbox as a quasi-forum on the right. Candyboy won with a generic trance song, and people complained about that, but the file was actually really good. This was probably my favorite OSC because we got a good system down, everyone else enjoyed it, and there was no drama or major complaining. First OSC with an onsite forum and the winner was by public vote.

http://ddrosc.bemanistyle.com/osc3/ OSC 3 Original Site
http://ddrosc.bemanistyle.com/osc3/top%20banners/ Banner Finalists

Tokens were the prize this time, and to start it off we held a graphics contest for the contest's Group Banner. The image contest was almost as big as the OSC itself, and there were many good graphics. Zhek, the wonderful artist and creator of those TranceMachina and other famous SM skins won, and his design became the site as well. The news was ran off a php script that grabbed the results off the newly remodeled forum, and I was given the power to post OSC's news on Bemanistyle's Main Page. This OSC had public polls again, but several votes by the same IP were found, and it was the first time anyone tried to cheat in OSC.
I do not have the final scores for this one, so if anyone does that would be great.
This one may have been my favorite also, 2 and 3 were both tons of fun, 3 was just a lot larger.

This was an experiment in trying to create a tournament that catered to DDR, ITG and KB at the same time. It was a good contest, but not as memorable as the past 4 were, and seemed to be weird with the finals being all three categories together. Very good entries once again.

They did do a good job, but it was still the nepotism thing and I still feel bad - honestly, Braki and MazriM doing well kind of set me on the 'hey this worked' mood (they did Bracket 1, Virgo 3). You all know how THAT ended up going <:/

Man, it really makes you appreciate how thorough I am with keyboard reviews when you read the comments by the other judges around me from OSC4.

Edit: That is to say, appreciate any judge who actually fills out the entire judge sheet and not "write down a sentence."

Actually, I wasn't around for cluster 3 or 4 of OSC3, so what happened? The link to her .txt file is dead.

<has no idea what happened either, though I think I might have heard tidbits about this locally>

Since some negative experience in organizing and simultaneously participating in DDR tournaments, I've been hesitant to enter my own tournaments, even when whatever is being fought over has been pre-determined in a relatively unbiased manner that has objective means of measure, there are still subtle things about the rules I would choose that could possibly give me some vague advantage, or, at the very least I felt I had more of an advantage in using rules to my advantage, since I had designed them. On the other hand, when I have less of a chance of winning or doing well, I've always had less qualms about entering...it's a touchy issue really, judging/entering or organizing/entering...unless I just finished talking about something that has nothing to do with what you were referring to, and then I'm just ranting. XD (Well, I guess it's a good thought to raise about judges/entrants anyway)

And, more on topic...I had weird song choices for past OSCs. ^_^;

NekoIncardine, thanks for making all this available!

Can you check the download links for OSC 4? The zip files don't appear to be there.

The links were just missing a slash. They're fixed.
