Hamm no like judge reviews. But hey, shit happens, gotta go get a non-CVS build for challenge round. Based on the hints for the KB round, that is. Good luck everybody.

jammitch! thoroughly enjoys difficult stepcharts. Just look at his ITG file from OSC4... o_o;

Man, the results overall aren't too great. What is Cheap Trick Kinda Girl doing in first place? That simfile was decent, but it had nothing on the likes of Breathe and Jump, neither of which made top 5.

Again, too bad Jammitch put my entry as one of his least favorites, but at least NekoIncardine gives it a nice rating that should move it up a bit. I'm obviously not going to win, but I'd like to do a little better than 16th place.

Wow, I can't believe I didn't notice the double-step at measure 82 in Asteroid Expert. I can't test anything higher than 9-10 footers on pad yet, but that's not really an excuse. Sorry for that.

Other than that, I think I did pretty well seeing as I've never really done pad steps before. Looking at the file now, there's a lot of things which make me wonder what I was thinking, and I definitely agree with the majority of the criticism I've received. I will avoid pointlessly short freezes in the future.

Big post time.

1) alphabet55: I rushed these and a few people did them in odd orders. Thank you for catching the error - Have You Never BEen Mellow was in folder order ("Mellow"), not title order ("Have You NEver Been Mellow") in discovolante's set, which screwed up a range of scores. It's been fixed, the end results will change it.

2) It's interesting that you note that a week isn't enough for 27 files... In optimal conditions, we have a couple weeks before the start for them... But jobs, family, etc. do kind of get in the way. There's a good chance I'll be gone here for a few days... Perhaps next time I'll do slightly smaller brackets (20 max?) to extend the competition and buy more time.

3) The way I plan to use to calculate the average will make sure that CBW is skipped, jammitch, don't worry

4) discovolante, this behavior is normal, he didn't rate his own song, and his scores will be adjusted based off his average. This is one major difference from the Tournamix series, and I allow only judges I believe to be trustworthy to do that. jammitch has judged and entered before and proven himself to be a quality, capable judge for that.

5) Noted jammitch, I removed #Infinity and Akira's scores on their own songs (Though both were reasonably fair, given) after carefully checking (I actually misplaced Akira's score on Gradation onto his own entry). The shifts-around alone appear to influence the results a bit, actually...

6) You can't win them all, #Infinity, and I was subimpressed by A Voice Spoke To Me, though it is by no means terrible.

7) Cheap Trick Kinda Girl got up muchly on Public Review, though it was solidly done as a whole... And yeah, the results are tentative for a reason. No guarantees but I should have mine done before my next shift at Movie Gallery (somewhere on THursday, Friday, or Saturday), if not my next shift for Dell (Tuesday early afternoon).

I'm kind of thinking that I'm going to start running more quickly-judged side competitions in the future, similar to Psychopath's Edition (see the thread I just posted). That one was the most fun I've had since OSC3 by far, so... Yeah.

heh, this is an interesting observation with scorings on my song:

NekoIncardine - "This one feels like you focused on ITG's giant gimmacks and overapplied them."

Shortysnmn2010 - "More ITG-ish gimmicks would have been nice, especailly at the slowdowns."

Jammitch - "> The quad in 64 is a surprise...
> As is the hand at the end. Neither is necessary."

A simple request for future judges that i have, is for you guys to actually discuss with each other and come to a consensus about whats generally acceptable in the specific bracket being judged (DDR/ITG/KB)
I understand the whole purpose of multiple judges is for their different views but with this point its like neko is pushing for friendly-stepping DDR and that jammitch wants a completely musically accurate experience like beatmania.

Regardless, thanks to the 3 of you for providing detailed feedback in your judging. I realize my stepmaking couldve been much cleaner had i put more effort into it :P
Also, thanks for not being completely anal about a mislabeled challenge rating like every public review has done ><
I actually didnt realize that the challenge steps were going to hold that much weight, so i just kinda went "i dont really care" mode while making it, lol

The one thing in these reviews that i wont be changing in the future though is my style of shifting and changing patterns. I always look for ways to blend all the rhythms and aspects of a song within the steps, and to make fun steps that can utilize partial bits of some themes rather than going straight off the most prominent theme. I do this because i believe dancing game steps need that kind of variety to produce interesting/fun steps. these string of games differ from the you-play-the-song types of IIDX/KBM/GF/DM/Popn and id much rather not step to song files as if they belonged to those games.
Thus, i find jammitch's reviews to be incredibly annoying as he seems to have made little forumulas to what is musically appropiate in steps (also flustered that ive been told that certain measures are 'wrong' when i MADE the song)
But thats just my little rant, differing outlooks are all cool as long as theres SOME common ground between judges for a big simfile tournament.

One last thing thing from nekos review, I got docked points for my song being "Way, way, way too long."
My song was 2:23, and not all of it was jam packed with steps
As i recall, the guidelines for the ITG brackets was to have a song between 1:15 to 2:45, and an *encouraged* length of between 1:30 and 2:30
yeah -_-

Can we expect better consistency for the DDR bracket and future contests?

well, a little defense about the correct spelling of my entry.

http://www.partyanimals.nl/discography.php

According to the discography of Party Animals in their official site, the correct spelling is "Have You Ever been Mellow?"

Go check the readme.html in my file and look at the CD cover. It will also show the correct spelling.

"HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN MELLOW" was the title of the cover by THE OLIVIA PROJECT

Same thing for me, but I suppose it's more of an issue about the track feeling too long rather than the actual length.

But still, IMO even the original cut of Asteroid (at ~3:30) had enough variety in it to warrant a nice simfile, but I decided to play it safe anyway. I really find it impossible to cut Asteroid more than this without making it feel "rushed". :/

Would you be able to post the full version? I'd love to have it. (I assume there are no legality issues with posting it here since you made it, heh)

Not true at all. Your 12-foot challenge did better than your heavy, and Emerald Sword was a 12 (13?) and it got first from me. Your file struck me as a pale imitation of Bloodrush, which I didn't like in the first place. Incidentally, Summer is fun, and beyond Grip, I've done at least 6 12+ footers.

That was only because I couldn't use parentheses for the upload, and forgive me, but I did not know that the right choice was to use brackets instead (if it was stated in the rules, then leave it as it is).
I wasn't talking about that, I was talking about this:

Besides, tilt is tilt is tilt, and I chose to grade down for a few little things that would take under a minute to fix that show that you paid attention to your file. I do my best to explain what and why. I know I'm a harsh judge, but someone has to play bad cop.

As explained in several places, I reamed Breathe because the choruses are just mirrored from one another. La-zee. Other than that, yeah, it's great.

Bolin: consistency is never going to happen, because everyone has different tastes. I know mine are a little different from the community at large (and yes I am an IIDX freak), but I always justify them. As far as hands and quads go, I think they should be used sparingly (quads more so - I have smallish feet), but obviously my entry used them so I certainly don't condemn people just for that. Judging from the big block of text, that wasn't my only criticism of your file, and no one nitpick weighs in at more than one point. Also, anything over 2:15 that was feeling long-ish lost one point for length appropriateness - yeah, it's in the rules, but it starts to get tiresome after a while. I find 2:05 to be about the real maximum for me.

Hrm... even so, it appears incorrect as submitted; if the error is on my end, I will give the point back.

Well, for ITG1 songs were mostly around the 2:00 mark, and people often feel that they are a bit too long because many of the songs didn't have enough musical variation to warrant their length. When I'm waiting in line to play ITG, often the ITG1 songs feels like "when are they going to end??" with the song progress bar (top of screen) moving really slowly...

For songs introduced in ITG2, most songs had lengths between 1:40~1:50 (with a few songer a bit longer than that).

Emerald Swrod on the other end, Neko fealt it was too short though... At the normal ITG2 length of 1:46.

Hey! I thought you rated my song 82/100, better than most reviews given for my simfile. Hopefully it's because you had extremely high expectations for it.
