Default Audacity Question

I got audacity recently, but I have not been able to figure out how anything works for the life of me.

What I really want to know is how to shorten songs or even save other changes through Audacity.

First off, you need to download the LAME MP3 encoder. Second, before you do ANY work on an MP3, SAVE A BACKUP. Then it's just a simple matter of cut-and-paste.

Audacity is also a great help if you want to do a perfect gap

Personally, I recommend Adobe Audition if your going to deal with audio editing... very easy to use and can handle more than just the MP3 format

You will probably find a LOT more help on the offcial website.
And since it's FOSS they probably have a good wiki...

I recommend against Audacity for song cuts because it's very difficult to do it accurately. I did them in that for a long time, but your songs tend to go slightly offsync if you make many cuts in the same file. I suggest using CoolEdit or Adobe Audition (same thing) because you can put the BPM into that and cut an exact number of beats from the song.

Of course if all you want to do is add an early fadeout then you can do that easily enough in Audacity. Just be cautious when cutting stuff out of the middle of the song.
