I put a background file into the song folder, changed the corresponing line in the .sm file, and tried "reload songs/courses" but the background doesn't show up for a few songs. Does anyone know how to correct this?
The file is in JPEG format. | |

Try using the "-bg" label. (example: "songname"-bg) It should indicate to Stepmania that it's a background file.

Tell us the structure of the files. does it follow the proper naming of the files?
Open the .sm file in notepad and see if the #BACKGROUND tag directs to the BG file you made | |

If after all this it dosen't work try renaming the song folder, or changing the file format of the image. I've had problems with certain songs that it would not read my .jpeg no matter what I did, then I changed it to .png and ta-da! | |

That, or GIF. I only use JPEG because they're smaller then PNG. But yeah, PNG is the way to go, it never fails me. You can also try BMP. | |

I had the same problem, and I was instructed to go to Game Options>>Reload Songs & Textures. After I did this, it worked. | |
