Default Best method for shrinking videos?

I'm trying to make a simfile with a video for the first time. I already have the video cut from the original and synced with the music, but the problem is it is 200mb for 2 minutes. I have tried experimenting with different codecs included in virtualdubmod and haven't found one that makes it small without looking totally cruddy. Can anyone recommend how to fix this? Thanks!

does not matter, no matter what video compressor program you use, it will look shitty, just think about it, it will take a while for you to get it, like me, but to downsize it you have to take away the resolution. Actualy that basicly sums it up! lol.

Encode it in XVID. Post your simfile in the database and then create a megaupload for the music video.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. xvid was a big improvement; I'm installing divx now and I'll give that a try. How big should I shoot for with the file size? Is 50MB considered too big for a music video (obviously not hosted on BS)?

Dl super(c) - Possibly the best free app ever.

Then use 1440bit/s+ sec hi-quality, 128/192k mp3 audio, ffdshow codec, DIVX.

Hey, the DivX rocks! The video is 14M now and the quality is pretty good still. Maybe I should have fiddled with the xvid settings more to get it to work better, but DivX has already won my heart.

14MB is still too large for a 2 minute file.

In VirtualDub...

Try applying Filters and add a Resize Filter. Shrink the video to 320 x 240. Once the filters are set, set the compression to DivX and configure it to at least 512 kb/s. It will dramatically reduce the filesize while preserving the quality (for playing in SM)

The problem with that is you're going to sacrifice quality if you do that, not everyone has tiny resolutions O_o;

a properly rendered 320x240 vid would have the best compromise of quality and file size. After rendering the vid, i would say between 8 and 10 megs should be the files size, 6 meg if you get the settings absolutely spot on!

Well, it's not like I'm rendering the video itself. I just ripped the music video for the song I want to step. DivX isn't doing a good job of compressing when I shrink it to 320x240. Either it makes a video that is still 14M and looks alright, or it makes something that is 2M and looks like junk. Well, that might actually work. I can post the 2M video as a sample and include a link for people to get a larger video.

well if you try putting the quality setting on 7 and the rate to 350 kbps, it should look orite and only take about 7/8 meg

and make sure you dont include audio!

AH YES! good thing you reminded that! the audio stream usually takes most of the space!

and by the way. 320 x 240 is still nice. Lemme upload something that has a small resolution but great quality.

EDIT: http://www.bemanistyle.com/sims/simfile.php?id=14241

here's a good example. The video is around 5 MB. I hope you don't mind AzN stuff

480x360 for me. I don't want to go below or even beyond that (800x600 anyone?). Sacrificing quality doesn't cut it. And I'd rather host the video FileFront because it uploads much faster in my own opinion.
