Default Choosing a song to make steps for

What the title means is this:
What kind of songs you would choose to make step files for and why?

I think I speak for most people when I say something short and something that's easy to sync (i.e. most songs being the same BPM throughout as to alleviate guesswork).

Other than that, songs that interest me...I'm not one to send out sims just because they're of popular songs most times. I'd rather dig a little deeper and do songs that no one's ever heard or done before. Kinda benches on that originality thing that a lot of sims lack...

...course I find myself, every so often, simming some popular song to keep my status quo afloat.

IMO, it depends.

I focus on trance/J-pop/J-rock/techno music. I find that the beats are always easier to lay out because you can tell when there's a BPM change or a freeze (most of the time). Since I work on a Mac, I use the assist tick in SM to lay out everything, and manually edit if I have to as well.

I also find that these songs interest me the most, so I work with what I have, and go from there. =3 Sometimes the files are easy to synch, and away I go. Other times it can be very very frustrating.

Me, I manily choose rock songs. As for the last sentence in your post, I can totally relate to that, at times it can be quite hard. The song I'm currently working on can be very hard to sync, not because of BPM, but rather because of the fact that even though it seems like you can just copy and paste some in some parts, you really can't because of the fact that the steps differ by one step often times.

I usually tend to go for gaming based songs, but mostly stuff I like, though I should probably try my hand at doing more mainstream stuff.

Anything that's non-repetitive and unique sounding. Not a song that just loops the same things over and over and over, which excludes the majority of trance, techno, several other genres, and most popular music.

However, I tend to contradict myself, even though I do believe in this, because I like metal so much I can't help but step it despite a lot of it being a bit repetitive and/or generic. Not all of it, though. Dream Theater, of course, is a great example of this, but most of they're stuff is a pain to sync. Most progressive metal is more interesting and provides much greater potential then, let's say, power metal. a.k.a. Dragonforce, haha.

Of course, I'm speaking solely about keyboard files. Almost anything can be turned into a pad file, and so, I don't really care what I step. As long as the song is awesome, and it's not to long.

Generally, I prefer to step metal, video game music, and orchestral/classical.

Pretty much what Hiryuu said. I'm actually a bit more of a stickler on this in that I refuse to step songs (even by same artists) that someone has done before, and even if I do it, then I will never release the simfile. It's a bit like infringing on someone's territory - people don't want and don't like you doing it.

I'm new to stepping so I choose songs with a steady BPM and, preferably technoish... But when i get better I will be stepping metalmusic, since that's the music I listen to...

Just pick a song you like, there's not much to it other than that.

Well, IMO the song must be able to have steps for it's purpose? Like a 14 footer KB song cant be an ambient song (with reservations for exaggerations )

Well yea...logically, you're not going to be simming something like bag to Energizer-like steps unless you want to look like an idiot.
