Out of the DDR simulators, only SM supports .bms files.

.BMS files (and also .BME files) are usually used for Beatmania simulators (e.g. Be-Pachi Music, SSRMax, and BemaniaDX). You can find more information on Beatmania simulators here.

The DWI/SM debate has been raging for a long time, and is a particular issue at ddruk.com because the simfiles they produce conform to dwi standards.

Clearly, for most practical purposes, choosing DWI over SM is a personal preference. I like the advantages DWI has over SM (but know I am in an ever shrinking minority).

Since SM is the only major simulator out there (even I'm not stupid enough to deny it), there will be a time when DWI will become redundant, though this will only be the case if major new game modes are implemented in SM (such as quad mode from ultramix).

As it stands, DWI just feels more realistic than SM...

Hopefully, SM4 will include Quad Mode soon.

I guess that mode would have to go in Select Style.

But the other Party Modes from those Home Releases just need to die.

What, you don't want a hands & feet mode using a webcam?

StepMania supports both SM and DWI so its not a problem for those people (like me)

Are there any other simulators that a >small population use?

It seems like most people use StepMania. However, the DWI format is more widly used. Almost any smaller simulators will use .sm files.

To be quite honest, EyeToy isn't really a "Party Mode".. given that Party Mode is exclusive to the Ultramix series.

I kind of enjoyed Bomb and Attack...

And they can be compacted to about 3 kB, yeah.

DDR:UK survives on user donations in euros. They can't afford too much bandwidth.

It does seem that SM is the last real simulator for DDR.

SM and FFR are the only ones that are currently still being worked on (I'm not 100% sure on FFR). The problem with most DDR simulators is exactly that. They are BASED off DDR which really limits them. Once they are "DDR-esk" work slows because what do you do with it once it's done? However SM has taken it a step further and has been trying to add more features and such.
