Default Dance pad connection problems

I have just got recently a dance pad for christmas but i had a problem with it, both the plugs at the end of the cord were not connectible to my computer (The first is a 25 pin and the second is a ps1 controller end). I went out and bought an adapter which connects the 25 pin to usb and that is now connected to my computer.

The problem is the dance pad does not seem to be registered by my computer at all. As I plugged the usb end in the PC, it gave the sound that new hardware was in and a pop-up said it has installed successfully, but when trying it in stepmania, the pad shows no signs of life. I have looked under game controllers in control panel but shows there there are no controllers present.

Can someone please help me to fix my problem?

Well, first you should check and see if the pad is actually responsive. If you go your Control Panel then to Game Controllers, the pad should show up. Then simply press the buttons upon the pad to see if they respond.

After that, go to Stepmania once more, and head to options. You should then go to Config Key/Joy Mappings. Once you do that, you then have to input the dance pad configuration. Use your keyboard to move left on the screen and hit enter. Press the corresponding pad button to the screen item. (For example, for left, press left on the pad). And so on... You don't necessarily need some keys...I usually just follow what's in the original Stepmania key configuration.

Hmmm, I went into game controllers and nothing is there. Everytime i unplug and plug the usb back in the computer gives the sound off that new hardware is connected but even when i go and check game controllers, there is nothing showing up O.o".

Huh...perhaps something is wrong with the pad...or (more than likely) the computer. The pad was NEW, correct? (As in, it was bought at a store?)

Shouldn't it be pointed out that it may not necessarily be a plug-n-play game pad?

If one plug type it has is PlayStation form and your computer has an LPT (printer) port. Then check this. Within that post, I mention the best method of pad to SM use.
