Displaying Song Grades

Color me n00b but I have a rather basic StepMania (3.9) question that I can't seem to find answered anywhere. When I finish a song, sometimes the grade I get on it gets recorded and sometimes it doesn't, but I would ideally like to have it recorded all the time. Is there a way to get this to happen? (Clearly I only mean highest grades.) Also, when it does get recorded, it doesn't get recorded attached to the difficulty level. Is there somewhere where I can get a detailed explanation of how the grades get recorded?

(I am indeed using a profile. That was the first thing I tried...)

It's recorded based on the highest score. So, if your previous A-grade score is higher than your current AA-grade score (Yes, it's very possible. I've gotten that many times.), the game won't record your AA.

Some themes don't show your high score for each song, so that's a possibility of what's going on.

Stepmania, by default, ranks scores not according to their letter grate but by their machine score. Machine score is a holdover from DDR and is a metric which weights steps later in the song far higher than those earlier in the song (that is if you get a CB near the end it hurts your machine score as much as two or three CBS near the beginning would).
So, if you get a higher letter grade and it's not recorded it's because too many of the CBs were near the end relative to what stepmania considers to be the better score.
