ITG/DDR Songs on Stepmania Illegal?

Well, now since ITGPC is out (including the ITG2PC upgrade), is it considered illegal for people to have the ITG/DDR packs/simfiles on stepmania?

well why would it've been legal before ITGPC came out? I don't it has ever been legal to have the simfiles/packs, but like everybody has them anyway.

Having full stepfiles and soundtracks from an expensive arcade game can't possibly be illegal until the PC version comes out?

It's always been illegal anyways, but you can't stop piracy.

It's not legal to have any song on Stepmania that you don't have permission to. Unless your entire collection consists of public domain music or files for which the author made or had permission to distribute the music (e.g. StepMix), your Stepmania is illegal. Big whoop, really.

Technically the sim maker also needs perdition from the artist to create the sim because it might not technically be covered under free use.

since PARANOiA is not a public domain track, which it's completely the opposite, then yes.

There are tons of sites out there if you take a quick search on google, find one then you'll get a better idea of what public domain music is.

i think its pretty much illegal to have any copyrighted song in stepmania.
But its one of those nobody really cares about

Thats where "fair use" comes in.
making sims of a song can be argued as being outside of fair use, thus it's illegal even if you legally own the song/s.

That ofcorse brings up the question of if you own an official DDR pack, can you then download that same pack?

R21 is more damning of an illegal situation that SM is imo. As near-perfect as SM is, it'll never really replicate the arcade experience like R21 potentially can, especially with the new exploit to go over the 2min limit.

The program has NOTHING to do with it.
It's all about the songs' copyrights.
SM and ITG are legal. (Some argue that SM 3.9 had some copyrighted images but those are going to be removed in 4.0 or might always have been removed)

I mean you had to know all along that it was illegal to get all of thsoe packs and simfiles from DDR. Still everyone pretty much has played them or had them on stepmania at somepoint. Why did konami wait so long. but chances are I still would have downlaoded the simfiles anyways. (Im ashamed )

They still haven't done too much about it to my knowledge besides tell some sites to pull off their sims.

StepMania with any song that isn't your'se or you don't have the artists permission to own = ILLEGAL.
All your MP3s for SM = ILLEGAL.
This site = EXTREMELY ILLEGAL.
