So, I've just downloaded stepmania and have downloaded a song. But, as soon as I try to play it, the program shuts down and an error message occurs. Can someone please help me!

I'm guessing that video didn't decode, so its not capable of playing through stepmania...

to be 100% sure to play make them DivX non-H264 encode (aka non HiDef Videos.) or XviD (aka non X264 or H264)
-I really don't know H264/X264 is workable on StepMania. (I doubt it cause requires alot of CPU power to do so..)

What simfile is it? Right click the video and select properties and tell us if it's Divx.

You don't have the proper video codecs. Go get a divx codec pack that includes xvid
