there are plenty of keyboard simfiles out.
90% of them suck.
here's a guide for who wants to improve or learn something about simfile creation.
INTRO: you are in front of your computer, and you think you are cool enough to make a nice simfile. so you look for a song that deserves to be stepped. if you are not cool enough your simfile will suck. 1) song selection
this is very important.
70% of the success of your simfile depends on what song do you choose.
song requirements:
-the song must be
original, and must have sounds variation and various instruments to follow
-the song must be
nice to listen (here's why sane ppl don't play yanah simfiles)
-the song
must not be too long, because most of players don't play long versions or marathons. you can use a long version/marathon only if the song is TREMENDOUSLY amazing. if not,
cut it.
-
MAKE SURE THE SONG YOU CHOOSE WASN'T ALREADY STEPPED. use that song only
if you think you can do better than the current simfile out.
example: Toph's Vook is better then the old KBMP version of Vook, made by Radical. GOT IT?
BREAK: you picked the song, now you are going to open stepmania an begin to sync and sim.
2) calculating BPM and GAP 100% of the success of your simfile depends on how do you calculate BPM and GAP. if you fail the sync your sim is going to be the highest pile of shit ever. be careful to bpm changes and stops if you want your simfile to become pretty cool.
IMPORTANT: if you are doing electronic shit i am 95% sure that bpm will be NOT curved. if you are doing some non electronic music
be careful to sync curved - irregular bpm (I refer to flashman - bursurk lurk / peaches and regalia - aperson). there are lots of programs that calculate bpm and gap out there, just search for them or handmake BPM and GAP if you think you are kawaii enough to do it.

i remember i read this some time ago:

Make sure you have already trimmed and cut everything you want from your song and saved it to your stepfile directory. Why? Because when you save mp3 editors usually add a very tiny amount to the front of a song, thus ruining your gap. Now zoom in on the song, and go to where the first note is, you should be very zoomed in (I zoom to the point where it just shows a line rather than a whole heightmap.) Find the first note of the song and slide the device controller down until the song speed is at .1. Play the first note and listen to where it first becomes audible (usually at the very start.) After you've found this look at where the CREST OF THE FIRST WAVE OF THAT NOTE IS. This is where you want your gap to be. Look at the ms counter at the bottom of the Goldwave bar and take your gap. Voila, you are guaranteed an incredibly precise gap with this method

i remember there is also a cool program here in this section, made by jyris1
get it:
DDReam Studio: Made to sync the toughest songs BREAK: you calculated bpm and gap, so you are now going to put steps on. 3) creating step patterns
another important step. assuming you have done correctly all the things before you have to focus your attention now. if you fail here you are a fucking whore and you will contract anal cancer. everyone has his own style, just try to find yours. but beware of gay triplets or ultrahomo index strems if there are other sound to follow.
don't try to follow everything and don't try to insert stupid combo breakers if they don't fit the song.
use 0.5 rate or so to sync sounds difficult to hear at 1x. try to simulate notes as much as possible and try to use keysound technique to
increase simulation level. focus your attention on
FUN. if the file is not fun to play change the patterns until it becomes fun. if possible, send the file to someone you know to test it. AND MAKE YOUR FILE
INTERESTING TO PLAY SPREAD BUT PASSABLE ON INDEX.
VERY IMPORTANT: avoid to spam around about your simfile. if it is good, people will recognize it. just post the link on dedicated sections of smgroove, or FFR, or whatever.
BREAK: steps are done, hopefully they are good. but they lack any type of GFX. 4) graphics
when people post the link of a simfile they usually place also the banner as a prewiev. if GFX suck difficultly people will download your file, so GFX are very important. so get graphics. almost everybody use random anime babies with hot abstract renderings, but it's better trying to be original. remember to make graphics that fit the song or, at least the title of the song. if you are not good at making graphics ask someone to make them for you. if the file is pretty good people will surely help you.
EPILOGUE: your file is hot and complete with graphics. post the link and the banner into the dedicated sections of the following websites: www.smgroove.com / www.flashflashrevolution.com.
these sites also have their dedicated simfile database, so you can also upload your file there.
now wait for downloads and feedback. good luck!!
