The general rule of courtesy you'll want to follow when taking someone's file and redoing it pretty much falls under two different areas...
If you're using their graphics, sync, file, everything like that and writing just an EDIT to an already made chart or scrapping their charts altogether but still using their stuff, then you'll want to get in contact with the original simfile creator for their permission.
Now if you're, say, using just the MP3 and EVERYTHING is redone from scratch, we're talking the banner, background, title, sync, the whole smack THEN you might not be that inclined to get into contact with someone, as generally that's not really their simfile anymore. It's just the music that is similar. If it's the same cut, you STILL might want to let someone know regardless (if it wasn't the whole song). I've actually had this happen to my own sims quite a bit and I don't usually mind...but what I usually like for someone to do anyways is to PM me that they have used something of mine that they had initially and done something completely different.
Now why is that? Well it's two-fold; for starters, if it's a lot better than something I've done, I've learned something from it that I can use in the next go round. Two, it just piques my curiosity, really. Just makes me wonder if people are interested in whatever is being re-simmed. |
