If you can't do that, then you are pretty much screwed. Can you not download Microsoft's asain language fonts? Once you do that all you have to do is use the Character Map and then copy and paste the characters in the Translation.dat file.

You could also use a .png to put in special characters like asian text or hearts or something.

For example, a Love Love Shine simfile I have uses this for the heart:

And this for the artist:

The .dwi file uses those graphics like this:
#TITLE:LOVE LOVE SHINE;
#DISPLAYTITLE:LOVE {LOVE LOVE SHINE-CHAR1.PNG} SHINE;

#ARTIST:KOSAKA RIYU;
#DISPLAYARTIST:{LOVE LOVE SHINE-CHAR2.PNG};

This is only done with .dwi format. When I looked at the .sm file, it had:
#TITLE:LOVE ♡ SHINE; (Love <3 Shine)
#ARTIST:小坂りゆ; (Kosaka Riyu)

#TITLETRANSLIT:LOVE LOVE SHINE;
#ARTISTTRANSLIT:KOSAKA RIYU;

Do you have your Windows XP CD somewhere? If you do, you can install the Asian language support via the "Regional and Language settings" applet in the Control Panel

EDIT:

@Ramengan: that only works in DWI (Dance With Intensity). It doesn't work in StepMania

Stepmania can read .dwi files. It showed the correct title and artist for that song when I loaded it like 5 minutes ago.

That's because you specified
Quote:
#TITLE:LOVE ♡ SHINE;
#ARTIST:小坂りゆ;
in the .sm file. And StepMania can read those "special" and japanese characters.

But, if you use only the DWI file thing:
Quote:
#TITLE:LOVE LOVE SHINE;
#DISPLAYTITLE:LOVE {LOVE LOVE SHINE-CHAR1.PNG} SHINE;
without having the .sm file with the correct characters, it won't work.

@ Wan: Initially, only the .dwi was in the folder. In other words, the .sm file didn't exist when it first loaded. I created that .sm file by resaving the .dwi in the editor, and Stepmania automatically filled in that info.

@ cusicat: I'll try.

EDIT: Sorry, I guess it won't work that way.

The reason behind the automatic change to the japanese artist (and the heart character on the title) is because Stepmania have a Translaton.dat (on the Data folder), that auto correct some artists names and some title and subtitles of the song.
Example: on the .dwi:

Quote:
Originally Posted by LOVE LOVE SHINE.dwi

#DISPLAYTITLE:LOVE {LOVE LOVE SHINE-CHAR1.PNG} SHINE;
#ARTIST:KOSAKA RIYU;
#DISPLAYARTIST:{LOVE LOVE SHINE-CHAR2.PNG};
and on Translation.dat:

Quote:
Originally Posted by Translation.dat

*
# I've seen both "Kosaku" and "Kosaka"; Kosaka is correct, but handle both. */
ArtistFrom: (Riyu Kosak[au])|(Kosak[au] Riyu)
ArtistTo: 小坂りゆ
*
So, StepMania, when is loading, changes the matched title and the artist with the Translation.dat title and artist, respectively, for each song that needs that change.

See ya!

Thanks for the info, Kyon. I guess that's why I thought it was working.
I guess the pngs won't work for this, cusicat. Sorry.

Wait, does Stepmania support some Japanese characters even if you don't have Asian fonts/support installed?

Yeah, but only the ones that are available for the theme, per example, the CyberiaStyle theme supports A LOT of Asian characters, more than the default theme, that only supports the ones that are on Translation.dat (and maybe a few more).

See ya!

@ cusicat: Well, I guess since the pngs won't work, try putting these into your .sm files. According to Kyon, they may or may not work depending on your theme. Just replace the corresponding tags with these.

Chikara
#TITLE:チカラ;
#TITLETRANSLIT:Chikara;

Himawari
#TITLE:ヒマワリ;
#TITLETRANSLIT:Himawari;

Kagerow
#TITLE:カゲロウ (Dragonfly);
#ARTIST:Des-ROW・組スペシアルr;
#TITLETRANSLIT:Kagerow (Dragonfly);
#ARTISTTRANSLIT:Des-ROW Gumi Special R;

#TITLETRANSLIT:Kagerow (Dragonfly);
#ARTISTTRANSLITes-ROW Gumi Special R;
Basically, if works on the default theme, it should work on any other theme
Anyways, I did a quick check if the above tags worked on the default theme. Chikara and Himawari worked without any problems, but Kagerow had an error. The working version of the Kagerow tag is:

Code:
#TITLE:カゲロウ (Dragonfly);
#ARTIST:Des-ROW・組スペシアルr;
#TITLETRANSLIT:Kagerow (Dragonfly);
#ARTISTTRANSLIT:Des-ROW Gumi Special R;
Maybe you can't see any differences between the two tags, but the "r" from the artist didn't work before, and now yes

See ya!

To answer shortly, it's because the fonts are read from the theme's FONTS directory. It doesn't have anything to do whether you have installed Windows' Asian Language support or not.
