Default PS2 DDR pad issues

I have a foam pad, and a "3in1 Magic Joy Box" converter. Not only do most simultaneous presses not work (certain ones do, certain ones work when they WANT to work), but the down button doesn't seem to be working all that great, either.

I checked the stepmania site for problems concerning adapters, and it had two different says. One said that it absolutely didn't work, and the other said it worked fine with a work-around technique. I checked the fixes page, and none worked aside from the one labled as the work-around technique. (The one where you step on one arrow and then immediately the next) I would really hate to use this, since it's not exactly how the game is to be played.

There's also a method that includes soldering. Is this the only way to fix the problem, or is there something else that I can use?

I'd get a cheap Dual Box Pro on Amazon to play DDR. To use that one, just press Start+Select+Up after plugging in the dance pad (try it on yours if you haven't, I think they use similar drivers). They run about 7-10 bux, but they're quality stuff.

I've actually convinced my dad to do the soldering while he was fixing the A button. He still hasn't done it yet, but if for some odd reason, it doesn't work, I'll get that converter instead. Thanks for the tip! (Though, pressing three buttons on a pad looks rather silly. I had to sit on one when I tried it before.)

Ah, I just stand on start+select and push my fist on up. Works nicely.
