If you have a Nvidia card (and I suspect ATI supports this also), you can change the settings for the card so that if a 4:3 resolution is being displayed, the card puts black bars to the right and left of the picture to preserve the aspect ratio. It's like an inverse letterbox function. I'd post more details about it, but I gotta go do something....
