Stepmania 4.0 keeps crashing on me while I'm making simfiles, so I was wondering if there were any other ways that I can make simfiles without being on Stepmania? I hope you understand what I mean!

And please don't say "GET 3.9" as that just makes BSODs appear everytime I load it.

I can play 3.9 as long as I want. If I switch to a windowed screen, play with a theme that isn't Default, minimize the screen or click anything, it's game over. BSOD. So that's why I've been using 4.0 lately.

If you mean scan it for viruses and de-frag it, then yes I've checked it.

Also, I would have no idea where to update drivers or even to check the ones I already have!

You're definitely a strange case. I've been editing simfiles a lot with SM4 and it works pretty well.

Seriously, check your Windows installation, there IS something wrong with it.

Ys, SM 4 works so much better than 3.9m, it just annoys me when I lose my data all the time. And saving it often seems to make it worse so I have to save rarely, and then if it crashes I lose MORE data.

I think my PC, or Stepmania, needs an upgrade!

wait a second, how many songs do you have in your Stepmania?

if there are OMGTHOUSANDSOFSONGS, I suggest using a separate installation of Stepmania dedicated for stepchart making (like I do)

I think I have around 3000. Would that be a significant amount to cause problems?

Okay, I loaded all the songs in my BEN.(SPEIRS) Originals folder (38) and started to sim my unfinished simfile for I'm Not Okay. It was going really well - no freezes, not even lagging. I thought it had worked because I was able to create Beginner to Difficult steps for it, completing the simfile. I then went on to sim Challenge steps to Black Parade and it just died the same way as before.

I think it DOES last longer now though.

It crashed, but SM survived a little while longer than usual.
