Default Stepmania on 512 MB Flash Drive

Is it possible to run stepmania on a random computer off of a flash drive w/ putting anything on that random computer besides the drivers for the flash drive? I tried it a couple times.. and each time i tried i ended up getting an error.. Did I get a faulty version of stepmania or is it my flash drive... or what....

then you'd most likely have to get that dll and either put it in the system32 folder or the stepmania folder somewhere, depending on what the dll is. google for the dll, and it should tell you where to put it.

You might have a file looking for something on your c drive (which is quite stupid of it). The best way to make it playable off a thumb drive is to install SM on your computer Put in a few songs (make sure your WHOLE SM folder is under 500MB). Run Sm off your HDD. Then copy the whole SM folder over. I wouldn't mess around with too many skins and such since that seems to be the main reasion behind crashes. You can also put SM on the thumb drive but make is read the songs off of a CD which would let you have more songs.

For those of us with huge iPods you can also run SM off of your iPod as long as you set your iPod to be usable as a removable HDD.

(For those interested in portable apps, I would recomend PortableApps.com. Portable Firefox is simply awesome. I've also used Portable Filezilla. The site has grown much larger then when I first found it actauly Steam can also be played off a thumb drive)

I bet that you were missing the msvcp71.dll file :P

You have to put it inside the PROGRAM folder (where the actual SM executable file is located), not right in the Stepmania installation folder.

Once you do that, you can now copy your entire Stepmania folder inside your thumbdrive and run it without problems. I did it, but with a portable USB hard drive... the idea is the same =)

Just I side note to not be careful. The iPod HDDs aren't made for extream usage. I know a friend who blew out 2 iPods BC he partitioned them and loaded one partition with bootable knoppix. After the send iPod's HDD died he realized that the HDDs just aren't cooled enough for extream usage...

Also, be aware that USB drives have a limited 'rewrite' life. Something in the thousands I believe. This comes into play when your writing high scores, settings, etc. I know that many 'portable' app versions get rid of cache's and the like because of this.

I think this is more tecnichal that literal.
The chance of killing a thumb drive is slim.

Plus, they are so cheap anyways :-P
I've got tons of the darn things and nothing to do with them :-P
