Default Stepmania lags with videos

Whenever i play stepmania with video backgrounds, the steps will lag, like for example, i press the UP button, but it will only trigger after 1 second later or so.

stepmania is fine with songs w/o video.. so i don't think its the problem with my computer.. can anyone help me?

Probably has his/her hard drive filled with too much pr0n, so it lags. In all seriousness, most computers are laggy with videos unless you have a good gfx card and processor.

It maybe the RAM as well. StepMania has a thing of taking a lot of RAM on some computers.

I don't think so. My comp has 128 MB RAM, but I don't experience any lag at all, songs just load a bit longer, but otherwise, performance is good.

I have a pc with these specs for testing lags and such:

AMD K6@450 MHz
S3 Video card (I forgot the name) with 16 MB VRAM
Avance Logic ALS4000 sound card

with these low specs, stepmania ran at 30 FPS when playing a song with a video but i'm still able to make a borderline AA or an AAA with it.

It means, it's not the PC specs but something else.

Perhaps it's the codec that Stepmania is using for the avi?

nope. Stepmania uses the same codec as the others. (check the dll file in the program directory)

Is the StepMania Graphic Render on OpenGL or Direct3D/D3D?

If its on OpenGL then change it to D3D
- StepMania Program Tools is where it is.

Another thing is the resolution of the video. So check the video of properties or specs of it.

From my experiences on my (AMD700 :: 512mb RAM :: 64mb Prophet 4000XT Video:: 8mb 16bit Creative Sound Blaster) Computer. It tends to lag up on:
  • XviD Encodes
  • Video Resolution/Screen Size of 512x384 or more
  • Bit Rate Per Second over 1000 (1000Kbps or 125KBps)
  • Videos with audio in them
  • Unknown codecs or non-common codecs

Mostly, videos with DivX works perfectly. Maybe Microsoft/WMP codecs, but I never know since DivX is getting pretty common videos I see (or I'm been around Anime Simfiles alot <.<)

Yeah, I sort of have the same problem too.

But I figured out that a small video (5-10 MB) gives better performance (less lags) than a larger one (30-35 MB). So I think the problem is the video is too big for your computer (and mine) to run smoothly. That's what I think.

If your screen resolution settings for SM are high, lower them. I had SM set to 1024x768 or whatever setting it was and the videos lagged big. After changing to 640x480, they ran smooth.

Also, in the options, when it asks for texture and video resolution (or something similar to that) set both of them to 32 bit, which is the highest setting. I don't know why, but lowering them lags songs. Well, at least for me when I tried it last week. >_>
