Default Stepmania Offset question

I've been playing Stepmania for a little over 2 years, but there's something that's been bugging me for a while. When you use Autosync with SM I notice that with a lot of songs, it syncronizes the notes with the music more than just playing the orginal default sm file that the simfile came with. My question is, how often would using this feature make the simfiles worse? For example when I used Autosync with itg's Disconncected Hyper, I noticed that by the end of the song the steps ended up coming earlier than they were supposed to instead of actually syncronizing them with the music.

Global offset simply decreases GAP values on-the-fly, globally. If a song's arrows are coming up early, that means your global offset from autosync is either too much, or the stepfile had a bad GAP to begin with.

You probably have one of three problems.

1) The bpm of the song is incorrect. The newest alpha of StepMania 4.0 has a feature that will correct a song with a constant BPM based on your steps.

2) The bpm of the song is changing. You need to either carefully sync it by hand, or find a program that will let you sync such a song; StepMania doesn't have such a feature.

3) The song is poorly cut, as in the simfile author tried shortening a song and didn't line up the beats correctly when he removed a section in the middle. If the cut was too short, you can fix it by removing a few milliseconds using a wave editor and then resaving the file, but this will hurt the quality. If the cut was too long, you're pretty much screwed. If you really love the song, get a copy of it and recut it yourself.
