Stepmania Tech Problems

Ok, I have been using 3.9 forever. Suddenly, it starts lagging REALLY BAD. Also, it doesn't seem to be a space problem, becasue I went through and uninstalled all of the programs I wasn't using. I freed up A LOT OF SPACE. Now, it lags so much it takes five-ten minutes just to load 211 songs and start the game.

Is there a fix for this, because I really want to start making simfiles again.

I was in the control panel thing assigning buttons to the player 2 pad, and i accidentally assigned operators mode to the enter key. I can't get it off, let alone do anything now, because the enter key is stuck that way, and I have no way of selecting anything.

I am so stupid. Please help. There's an external way like in a config file or something to fix that right?

Also, I'm new here.

Remove this file: [StepMania Folder]\Data\Keymaps.ini

That will remove any usermade changes from the key configuration.

Define "Suddenly"

Any new program installations? Change your video card driver?
Perhaps try reinstalling Stepmania. Possibly try Defragmenting the hard drive. Never heard of stepmania "Suddenly" changing...I think something must have triggered the lag.

ps - Do No other programs lag?

so i was chilling at about 1000 songs and just went and added sumwhere around 3000 more, and now when it loads it shows all the songs loaded then goes to a blank screen, even though i can navigate with the sound. And i have uninstalled 3.9 and reinstalled...

Try removing 1000 songs and see if it works. Hell, remove all but one song and see if it works. If not... don't know what to tell you.

Yes, I believe I remember StepMania's base programming have a limit somewhere near 2400 songs. It's no big loss... even with all the official charts in existance there's only about 1800 good sims out there.

Alternative (if the song limit is the problem)---

Install two different copies of Stepmania and cut your song distribution in half across the two installs.

But I think it'd be much better to get rid of crumby simfiles as Zanaso said.

BASIC PROBLEMS:

I can't press up+down!
For some pads you will need to set them to dance mod. This can be done differently depending on your converter. Check stepmaina.com for more help on that. Other converters do NOT suport dance mode. The radioshack converter (which is easy to find) does NOT work with dance pads!

When I try to start the screen just black out and doesn't run!
Make sure you have the most up-to-date video and sound drivers.
Worse case: re-install SM.

I'm stuck in Free Mode!!!
Press F3 untill it's bad to the mode you need

Hi, this is rusty6, im having a problem with the arrows everytime i play a song, like for instance everytime theres a part where you have to use 3-4 arrows at once when playing a song, well for some reason i cant do that in any song, the parts where u use 3 or 4 arrows at once, so a little help please(im using Stepmania 3.9), thanks.

I have the same problem too. Left+Up+Right and Up+Down+Right. Other 3 button ones work. I'm using a keyboard too.

Many keyboards have this problem (it's the keyboard, not the game). There are two possible solutions:

1) Learn to buffer. The idea here is to hit the buttons as though a gallop with the intent of hitting the second set on the actual note. For instance, if the notes are LEFT-UP-RIGHT, then you would hit LEFT then UP-RIGHT consecutively. Also, note that on keyboards that have this problem, it IS possible to hit LEFT-DOWN-RIGHT simultaneously, also UP-DOWN-RIGHT can be hit simultaneously (not the other two variations though).

2) Get yourself a better keyboard, I'd love to find a list out there for keyboards that this works on, but for now I can only recommend the Z-Board. It may be an expensive keyboard, but it is the best on the market, to my knowledge. I've never seen a broken Z-Board and you can hit all four of the arrows simultaneously. It is widely known that lots of USB keyboards can hit all four arrows at the same time, but not all of them can, it's a gamble to get anything other than the Z-Board unless someone else can recommend a confirmed cheaper one.

I sort of found out you could "buffer." I somehow hit a DOWN-UP-RIGHT held for the first time today. I'm also using a laptop, so I don't want to buy a USB keyboard. So I'll be learning how to buffer better than.

I also just remembered that I already have a USB keyboard that I use to use when I played online with my PS2. I should find that and see if it works.

Yeah, it is unfortunate, but buffering can be a real pain on three or four arrow holds.

Have you tried simply mapping the key configuration to other buttons on the keyboard?

I've found that other keys often work with three or four hits at the same time, just not the arrow keys.
