Default Surpisingly slow frame rate

Hey, so I got a new laptop, and it's higher end than my old computer, but it sucks at playing Stepmania. It's jumpy, and the arrow response seems to be laggy. It's the same way with FFR. I think the arrow is a keyboard thing (any way to fix it?). However, I already played with the display options, and I can't find a cure. Is there something I don't know about?

Have you tried a USB keyboard? You could also need to set a global offset

Would a USB keyboard help the framerate?

Are you running any other programs other than Stepmania at the same time? Sometimes running stuff like Aim or Limewire can make some other programs laggy.

Did you try reinstalling it? Maybe a corrupt file?

Hope I helped.......::feels useless::

it might. some laptops have a good bit of keyboard input and lag so an external keyboard just might do the trick. You could also try running it in window mode and killing the vsync in options.

Hmm... if you're referring to the framerate.... which graphics chip does your laptop have? Some have really shitty ones <.<

Graphics Chip (I think this is right): Radeon X1300
and just for the heck of it, I'm running Vista. I know vista's bad, but is it THAT bad?!

I've found that OpenGL actually works much better than Direct3D for StepMania 3.95 with Groove 2.4 in Vista.

As for input lag........ my old Toshiba XP laptop is a hopeless piece of shit. Keys lag like no other, ghost triggering, not-triggering, and USB keyboard acts the same, which makes me believe that Toshiba has a mobo (laptop?) problem. You may not be able to fix input lag even with a global offset change..

Depending of which SM version are you running...

SM 3.9: <your SM installation folder>/data/StepMania.ini
SM 4.0: My Documents/Stepmania CVS/save/preferences.ini

The very last line is called VideoRenderers=. Try exchanging the values in it (if is says "opengl,d3d" leave it as "d3d,opengl"... and vice versa)

Bingo.

Vista is a hore and hogs up a huge amount of memory, so upgrading ram wouldnt hurt?

Mind you my new vista comp runs SM at a super smooth 60fps @ 1024res, but that dance! game that was ok on my old xp pc lags like a bitch on my new vista one.

Resuming... if you can downgrade to Windows XP, DO IT. Vista is still pretty buggy, with a big lack of good drivers for it.

Before I even try to install another OS, give me the info on RAM. How much would I need? I appear to have 2 GB...
