I do pretty much anything. For example...
1. I'm working on Don't Say Lazy (TV Size) by Yoko Hikasa right now, which is J-Rock. YouTube - K-on ED full [Don't say lazy]
2. I recently submitted Dawn (Perpetual Mix) by KaW vs. i09 for Stepmania.com's Stepmix 5 competition. YouTube - Pump Pro - Dawn (Perpetual Mix) CZ
3. I'm contemplating doing Balrog's Stage from Super Street Fighter 2. YouTube - Street Fighter II Music - Balrog (NA, Europe) / M. Bison (Japan)
4. I've done multiple songs by Savage Garden, an alternative band. (I think that's how they're classified.) YouTube - Savage Garden - The Best Thing
And so on.
What do you do?

I mostly just step video game soundtracks for but if the song has a catchy beet, then I'll step it. Example, "Son Of man from from Tarzan, which i already stepped and released.
Right now i am working on a project called Ultimate mario simfile pack. Its mostly got super mario rpg, Mario 64, and SMW; but if it is from a mario game, anything goes.
Please give me feedback on the files i have finished so far. bemanistyle.com - #1 In music game coverage - Dance Dance Revolution, Beatmania, IIDX, Guitar Hero, Rock Band

Not a smart plan most times if you're one that does it for the fame or notoriety.
I mean a lot of my sims bases off of gimmicks anyways and most of them aren't incredibly in-depth or using negative stop/BPM tricks but enough to at least mess with the person enough while still being fun. There are a few times I'll cave and do a sim to something that everyone's looking at just to maintain the status quo but I usually like to delve a little bit farther than the norm. I mean check this out.
That posted, I also tend to use whatever I make to promote other artists out there. I've done this a few times but people that I talk to enough that would benefit are people like Detach or Bouche. If you've got something I like and I have the time, I usually like to get some feedback coming their way about their style. Generally, they turn out to be real good in the long run after a few years.
So it's kind've a win-win for people that get a hold of me that are artists in that regard...IF you have something that would be considered worthy of a sim, that is. I've got preferences to songs like other people but I'm usually quite open if it's got beat and could theoretically go to decent steps.

Gets kind of hard sometimes, since I like to make songs that not many others have. Hard to get some easy downloads when most folks don't know half the stuff I've done

For keyboard files I step a lot of metal, a good bit of video game music, and occasionally anything else I can find that I like. For pad I step a crapload of video game music but virtually no metal. My other pad files mostly consist of rhythm game music (GF/DM being my favorite), and a little bit of everything else. One thing I very rarely ever step is mainstream music. You know, like stuff you would hear on the radio or something. Generally, I'm a lot more picky about song choice when it comes to keyboard files, though, sometimes I step bland songs simply because I like the music so much. Quote:

On an aside, uugh I wish anime wasn't so popular :< a lot of them basically ARE mainstream songs if you look at how they're stepped with like 8ths, 8th jumps to the lyrics, occasional 16th fills and w/e. again not universally bad but I wish they weren't instant mass download material
