Default What Music Files Can StepMania Read?

I've been having some problems making simfiles lately. I just got a new PC with windows xp. I tried making simfiles again for StepMania and it won't read the music files I'm using. They are in MP3 format and that's what I've always used to make simfiles. In the DWI file under Music, I type: Song Title.mp3. It doesn't seem to want to read the music file though. So I was wondering what other music file formats StepMania is compatable with. I'd also like to know how to input them into the DWI file, as in what I have to type. I tried .mpeg but that didn't seem to work either. I'd appreciate anyone's input on this and any suggestions I can use.

Thanks

i know it works with .mp3 (i don't know why yours isn't O_o) and .ogg, but i haven't tried any others. are you sure that you have the exact filename of the file?

I think I typed it in right. From all the simfiles I've created before all I had to type was the name of the mp3 [as in what I titled it] followed by .mp3 in the DWI file. Now when I do that though, it doesn't acknowledge the music file when I load it into StepMaina. So I'm not exactly sure what to do. I appreciate the response though. Much appreciated.

Is there a semicolon after the .mp3 (;) ? Normally I already have my mp3 cut when i create a dwi and stepmania fills in the music part.

Ok. I've fooled around with the file a bit more but still can't get it to work. So what I've done is I've uploaded the File to the Simfile DataBase. If anyone thinks they can help, please go the Simfile DataBase and type in "Test File" where it asks for Simfile Name. I think I did everything right but my StepMania just won't read the music. Please leave a reply with any help you can give. Sorry for uploading something that's not truely a Simfile but it will be once I get this to work so please forgive me and I will remove it once I have fixed the issue. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

mp3 ogg wav mid

dwi song tag:

#FILE:songname.file_extension;

also, please don't pollute the sim database with files like that and THEN advertise it, that's against the rules... furthermore you're using DWI format with SM, this is what you bloody need u_u

#TITLE:At the Beginning;
#ARTIST: Disney;
#FILE:Beginning.mp3;
#BPM:93.430;
#GAP:0.00;
#SAMPLESTART:42.808;
#SAMPLELENGTH:12.000;

Default Thanks

Thank you for the info, I'll try it out and I did apologize for putting that file on there but it was the only thing I could think of. I will take it off asap. I always used the DWI format for my simfiles and never had any problems up until now but I will try the layout you suggested. Not trying to break any rules here. just want to make more simfiles for people to enjoy.

Well, it didn't work for me so I'm just gonna give up on Simfile making. I'll pull that Simfile I submitted off there so I don't upset anyone else. Was fun while it lasted. Thanks for all the suggestions ^^

you dont need to give up. open the sim in stepmania editor and choose save. it will create an sm file in the same folder, which is much easier to read and set up.

i was just about to suggest that. when it saves, it saves an .sm, which should find the music even if you don't input the filename.

Well i know you can't just rename the extension and just put .mp3. That's not gonna work (it's like renaming an apple and telling it it's an orange...it's still an apple). You'll have to convert the file to mp3 from whatever it is, or ogg.

Wow I just found myself having this problem. I ripped a wav file from a Boochsack (YouTube) video and the wav wasn't recognized by Stepmania at all. The wav played just fine though. I converted it to an OGG file with Audacity and now it works great.

Yeah, mp3 ogg wav mid all work. Thing is though, that certain kbps can't be read by StepMania. I do a lot of soundfile converting and I noticed the same thing is true about certain MP3 players as well.
