I think there's probably some sort of mystic pre-training regimen that you can go through to gain two-hand coordination. Though I don't know of one... (I play the piano so two-hand coordination come naturally kinda-sorta). But still, I think one-handers have it hard on certain songs (i.e. Jazz songs, where the tempo switches rather frequently, can get pretty frustrating on a one-hander).

But I don't understand how some people can start by playing with only one hand(index too, for that cause), it just seems so unnatural.
4 buttons = 4 fingers. Also, you would have to be extremly fast with one hand to be a good one-hander. Using two hands makes the playing a lot more relaxed.

If the song is really fast I always use my index finger to pick up some of the load. I use my index finger especially where there's streams of up/down arrows.

Especially if you do up/down jumps by pressing the keys with the middle finger.

I started playing one handed, and could do really any of the challenge songs on the Otaku mixes. I was good, but had to take breaks every two or three songs because of my wrist. Then I started to download files off FFR and here, and they're much harder, so I taught myself to play two handed.
I do right and up on the Dpad, and left and down on 'z' and 'x'. I can still play one handed well enough, but I preffer two hands now, I feel like I'm playing piano or something neat like that.
Personally, I think one and two handed have their ups and downs. It's tons, TONS easier to play spread, because one handed, I found my fingers getting really tied up. But one handed does tend to require a little more skill, because on difficult songs, it's usually required to be ABLE to tangle your fingers, but untangle them without screwing up in the process.
Both ways are fun. I encourage learning onehanded first, so you can get used to the arrows, then maybe move on to two handed, if you want...

Spread really isn't complicated at all, the reason why I started was because I got into habits of using my right index for up and right and my left for down and left, which then led to me using my middle finger if I needed it, then just full spread. I'm terrible with indexing again, one handed is fun though, I just can't play the songs I can spread.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | My play style is really weird. I play with 2 hands always, but I alternate between 4, 6, and 8 fingers. For 4 and 6 finger play, I use the arrow keys with my right hand and I use the z,x,c,s(sometimes d) keys with my left hand. When I use 8 fingers, I use the home row on the keyboard. For the left hand, a is left, s is down, d is up, and f is right. For the right hand, j is left, k is down, l is up, and ; is right. I used to play easier songs in 2-player by myself with the 8 finger method.

As for the topic question, I would say that it would depend on the person.

I can only do one handed up till 14..so..I say try one handed, and if you're not good with it, try two. Also, whoever it was on page one who said they played one handed with their thumb on down, that's rather stupid. :/
You're thumb is like upside down, besides..more work out for your other fingers if you only use the first 3 like i do.
