Default BMS/BME technical question

I really don't know how the files are constructed, I'll be the first to admit that.

A lot of the simfiles I've ripped using SaxxonPike's BeMedia Ripper (which is an excellent program) are giving me trouble. For some reason, when automatically renaming the WAV files from 01-ZZ, it does not leave 01, or ANY slot blank for me to put in the background music. I think this may be because the background music is not the first sound played, but I could be wrong. Perhaps it's just a bug with the program.

So, I think there's some kind of #BGM tag - but how does it work exactly? I would rename the audio to 00.wav, put #BGM 00.wav then, but... what else do I put in there to make it actually play during the song?

The background audio (most times) whenever ripped by the BeMedia Ripper places it as 01.wav

That's most times, or... just look for the large WAV file =P

Nope, it sure doesn't. It goes in the root folder, you rename it to 01.wav, and move it into the keysound folder. But sometimes there's already a 01.wav in there for some reason.

There's already a 01.wav because of how the format works. Of course, it can be safely overwritten. The reason that it's this way is because I'd rather rip everything just in case there's that one exception (Macho Gang comes to mind). But if a song has a BGM, you can safely overwrite the 01.wav already in there.
