yeah im fine with keyboard but i'd much rather prefer a controller set up:
1) so i can press 3+ keys at the same time
2) scratching means scratching
3) so i can use more than 5 fingers to play 7 key
4) the whole IIDX experience
Hate to necropost but I just started getting interested in playing Beatmania, and this morning got a IIDX sim.. is this a good way to start getting into the game? I have to admit trying to align my hands so I can press all the keys at once is a bit hard.. and sometimes I have trouble keeping track of what key is which, because I think at the most I can handle five keys at once. (playing PIU:Portable)
Eventually you'll get used to it. Like Pop'n Music I thought I would never get used to and now I'm passing 38s. I think the best way to get into the game is find a place to get a USKOC, then import copies of the games. You'll be getting the real experience rather than a simulation. Of course, if you can't afford it, then yes, simulation is the second best way. Well there is another way...
Yeah, trouble is, I'm in Australia and they never released a PAL version of Beatmania.. :/ I wish they did. My PS2 isn't chipped either so importing is a no-go.. unless I can find somewhere that's willing to chip an original PS2, apparantly they've stopped doing that here.
I bought a Japanese PS2. I realize that not all people can afford it, but it's definately the safe alternative to modding anything. I don't trust my hands, so that's what I went with. Shipping to Australia shouldn't be over kill.

You can order a swap disc/slide card set off some internet vendors. Those will let you play imports.
I have a set and my old PS2 plays Red and Happy Sky just fine.
I don't like playing with a keyboard but since I don't own the controller or any of the games formally yet that's what I have to use. Mostly I'm playing simulators to get good at fast pattern interpetation but my fingers are big and just hit the wrong keys at the wrong time. Can't wait until I have a controller.
I've been using two keyboards to play IIDX simulators for years (one PS/2 connection and the other a USB). To me, I play much better that way because it'll allow me to simultaneously press more keys at the same time (even all 7 keys plus scratch) and both my hands are completely independent of each other instead of having two hands in one small space of the keyboard.
I use my left hand to take care of the ZSXD keys on one keyboard which is on the keyboard drawer and my right hand to take care of the DCFV keys on the other keyboard which is on the top of my desk/workstation, just a bit elevated.
I am decent at KOC (9) but am better at KB (11), scaling is easier for me on KB than KOC, don't know why but I think its because the keys are alot closer together. Though that may be a reason why some may say it is harder on KB...I think it has to do with what you get used to first. Consective turntables are sometimes hard to pull off. And one more thing that is sort of annoying is when you have to hit 3+ keys at ALMOST the same time (like a "gallop") when playing KB to avoid keylock, when you do this often you memorize which chords require you to "gallop". The problem with this is you have to teach yourself to forget that stuff when playing KOC because it doesn't lock. k i'm done rambling
