Zarcom, I'm having trouble understanding how that post was relevant to this topic at all.
I think that it would be helpful to learn at least an elementary level of keyboard technique in order to play the game. Knowing how to play scales quickly will make the game so much easier and so much more enjoyable, and if you were to approach it the right way I think that Keyboardmania/ Doremi Mania would help your keyboard skills; again, because of the sight-reading aspect that dev314 mentioned.
I played Doremi Mania for about a year in high school, before I had any keyboard experience, and I got the impression that I would never improve past the plateau I had reached unless I learned how to play piano properly. I have taken two semesters of Piano Class at school, as a music major, but we didn't cover very much. I'd love to get back into it after studying some more piano and getting more fluent on the keys. The problem with Doremi Mania/Keyboardmania is that it does not train you to do anything specific with your hands, so you will likely develop unconventional fingerings for certain things.
Long story short, if you start out playing piano/keyboard first it could be very helpful, but if you have no training at all then it will not improve anything for you.
