Default Dance Freaks/Maniax CD?

Ok first of all, this is a concept and I have no intention on doing this. (but if I do, it will be for personal use and will never be released)

I was wondering if you take a Dance Freaks CD, and found an emulator. Would it be possible to rip the song tracks and stepfiles off of it?

And if thats possible, running it's os? But if not the stepfiles at least. To help with developing a noteskin/theme for Stepmania?

Or is it completely proprietary and nothing can be done with the disk outside a machine. But I would like to know if anything can be done.

But the legality of it all, I dont think it has in issue. Or would it? I mean I would own the original disk and I would also not use the disk for anything more than personal development.

I did however find a disk that I could possibly get for under $15 and I was thinking it could be a neat project to do. Im a huge fan of this game by the way as you can see from my other thread.

If you can find someone who can hack the format the files are in, that's the only way you'll be able to rip the stuff off. A custom tool would have to be made for it, unless someone has a secret one somewhere.
There is no emulator that works with a disk, nor is there any way to ru t he disk.

I did hear somewhere that if you had a modded ps1 you can half boot a DDR disk. But after a ceartin point it had some sort of error. would a ps1 emulator be a possibility?

What am I asking this? I dont think too many people have tried to do this. So support will probabaly not be existint.

But even being able to get the music off of it will be nice. I'm guessing it would be some encrypted mpeg or mp3 format, and cracking that couldnt be too hard.

But i'm not expecting to run the disk anyways. Just getting the stepfiles and/or music files will make it worth it for me. And a BIG help on the stepmania noteskin/theme I'm working on.

Getting the stepfiles off would be harder than graphics or movies. Mainly because you have no clue how the files are encoded, written, saved, or put together. Music would still take a lot of work, because it's an arcade disc, not just a ps1 written game.
If you're not an experienced hacker, good luck getting stuff off of it at all.

If it's for the bg movies, I'll ask Akira about it!

The bg-videos in there are useful for SM.

I might be able to help you out with ripping some things. I can't promise anything, though.

To the question about playing it: No, it's not possible yet. Your best bet is to wait until the drivers for mame are finished for the DDR games since it's based on the same hardware.

Is there going to be a mame driver? I know they have them for many classic type arcade games, but ddr and dmx and all those other things? I know that they have filetypes on some of the bemani games that no one has cracked.

But, I can try this whenever I save the money to buy me an original ddr solo pad. And on that note, what is Channel Beat's reputation?

Mame already supports Beatmania and some old Pop'n Music games. DDR (and the other games on the same hardware like DMX, GFDM) drivers should be out within a few years. That's just my guess though.

I've heard mixed things about Channel Beat but I think it'd be best to ask someone who has dealt with them.

Why ripping the arcade disk? I found on net full pack of DMX 1st and 2nd with real 'steps'. Everything in mp3 + *.dwi/sm and some with lyrics.

To say I did it, and to have something as a lil collection item... thats about it. I'm wanting to convert a DDR solo pad into a ps2 one, and for $5 I can get the disk i think its $8 for ddr 1-3 disks. But $5 for a bootleg arcade disk isint that big of a loss

There is nothing illegal about it.

1) Personal use, and will NEVER leave my house.

2) I will own the original disk, which will allow any ripping/backup copies in my possesion legal.

3) Hacking is one thing, illegaly distributing is another.

Ok, well I have a doubt that anything would happen if I tried. Maybe waiting for a mame driver then would that be legal?
