For PIU, KickItUp (KIU) is the main choice. It provides the most. Other than that, there's also a "Pump PC" program, where it basically IS the game itself, on your PC. But you can't do much with that, so, KIU is probably the best bet to go on.

But doesnt Stepmania provide basically everything, like BGA's and arrow effects?

Although Stepmania is good at DDR emulation, it's so-so for PIU emulation. The problem is with the size of the notes and the spacing of the PIU notes, which isn't quite the same as the PIU game, and it does throw people off. Even playing it, I still feel something's wrong.

In my opinion, the best PIU emulator now is DirectMove. Not only does it let you play with songs with many more BPM changes than KIU does (KIU only lets stepmakers have 2 BPM changes), but the interface is nice and the notes are spaced properly (except holds aren't registered properly yet). In addition, it's still being worked on, so hopefully they'll implement proper hold grading soon (not like Stepmania does that properly either). Also it's SMALL and faster loading than Stepmania.

And make sure to get version 0.5... it's miles better than 0.4

Yep thats why i prefer DirectMove you can put a lot of BPM changes and is easy too =P i like more the 0.4 version the 0.5 is great you can put STOPS and other thinks but the exorbitant think is so frustrating T_T

Stepmania is best when it comes to simfiles, animation and what not. Only down fall it doesnt have the arrow situation when it comes to the holds. KIU is best for real piu game action when it comes to theme and what not. Just takes a lil bit more getting use to then stepmania since stepmania is more well known for dance simulation.

I prefer Stepmania.

I dunno why ppl say it doesnt simulate PIU well, Ive never had a problem with
it, even in the Stepmania 4 version I havent crashed a single time or have
experienced something weird.

Besides its the only program I could get to detect the PIU pad, KIU didnt want
to recognize it and DM... well, I just didnt like the interface, and when I wanted
to verify if it worked, It just didnt want to run, so I go with stepmania.
