Probably because OGGs can be played on ITG2 R21 machines, whereas MP3s can't. Which is a pretty significant advantage in their favour when Stepmania supports both equally.

You overestimate the amount of people that care about that.

QFT.

Also, I would use MP3 because you can actually burn the songs to a disk whereas if you have OGG you need to download new software. Hell, I can't even LISTEN to OGGs.

Use the files native codec.
If you downloaded it as an MP3, use the MP3.
If you downloaded it as an OGG, use the OGG.

This is because you will only LOSE quality while converting.

That is true to..

Though, when it comes to pack wise... you can always put up another pack for those ITG2 R21 machines. Like Shortysnmn2010 is doing on his Albumixes...

Plus, people can always convert on there own, unless they know how to edit .sm/.dwi files and .ogg/.mp3 files.

What is the limit of length or filesize to be able play on ITG2 R21?

Yeah, but by the same token, how many people care that it's in MP3? I know that when I play simfiles I don't care what format the song is in as long as I can play it and it doesn't sound horrendous.

Is there any disadvantage to using .oggs over .mp3s? Besides the tiny amount of quality you might lose by conversion if you know what you're doing, I don't really see any.

Personally, I'd prefer mp3s so you could burn them onto a CD. If Gigadelic wasn't an mp3, I'd have seizures.

Honestly this really depends on your target audience. If you're just making a simpack for a keyboard player then honestly either format would be fine. If your intent is to attract players who use ITG then its better to create the pack with ogg. To be quite honest, I myself lean more towards the mp3 side of the argument because ITG players are few and far between in my area rendering the need for ogg audio files to be pretty much nonexistent (as well as the fact that I sometimes take those mp3s with me to listen to on the road.) Create a second pack if demand exists for such but otherwise go with the majority verdict.

You don't, but other people do. I've gotten a bunch of emails asking for the full version (in mp3 format) of some songs that I've done, because they like the songs and want to play them outside of SM. I've gotten 0 requests to for .oggs.
