Beat'n Groovy, more like Beat'n Hideous

Thanks to our anonymous sources for once again pulling through with some more info on Konami's upcoming XBLA title Beat'n Groovy (previous headline). Not much new on the info front, but now we at least have some images to back up some of the claims. Warning, existing fans of the pop'n franchise will NOT like the direction the art has taken. From the images we can at least tell the following:
on 5 button mode the buttons are mapped as such:
Left - 1 (purple)
up/down - 2 (blue)
right/x - 3 (red)
Y/A - 4 (green)
B - 5 (yellow)
The left and right bumpers are presumably used in 7 button mode.
The note colors have also been changed (as noted above).
BPMs are listed on the song select menu, along with existing high scores.
The following songs are playable so far (from previous reports as well as the screens):
Lala Moore - We Two Are One good-cool feat. Aundrea L. Hopkins - Gotta Get My Groove On dj TAKA feat. Erika Mochizuki - Moon Sakurai Yasushi feat. Kudo - Missing Cat Waldeus Von Dovjak - R.C. Orange Lounge - 100Sec. Kitchen Battle! 猫叉Master - Beyond The Earth Ryu☆ - Starmine (pop'n mixx)
See this is a good instance in which it would have been a -BETTER- idea to just domesticate an imported version than to create a (practically) all-new one for our market. Again, good music but I still can't believe this is supposed to be Pop 'N..
btw: Pop 'N Music was a MUCH better and applicable title for this game than 'Beat 'N Booby' ever was. =P~
I kinda wish the characters would have been, er, better looking, but this isn't the end of the world. It's Pop'n enough to fit the theme but American enough to not look completely weird to people new to the game.
Who knows? Maybe Konami will consider Pop'n Music for an American release if this does well enough.
There were plenty of pop'n characters from the actual series that could have transferred over without looking too japanese. That was kind of the point of Judy and Mary, wasn't it? America doesn't need an art style that looks like it was drawn by a bored high school student in science class.
Beat'n Nasty or Big N' Tasty. Looks like an old school version of Beatmania sorta. Game looks really odd. When I saw the title of this thread, it made me laugh, haha!
Holy christ those characters are horrifying :( Like...good god seriously how is this even americanizing it, everyone is going to hate that art no matter where they're from.
To be fair, this is really similar to how Pop'n Music started off in Japan too. Take a look at how the character style and interface looked -- it's actually pretty comparable; lots of solid primary colors and slightly wonky character designs
... Oh god, this is just horrible. pop'n was meant to be pretty and colourful with a clean art style, not ghetto and CHECK THE BEAT OUT ON THIS TRACK YO. Even though this reminds me a bit of the old 5key style, the 5key style is so much better than this shit.
On the other hand, the masochistic part of me wants to see how they'd do Cup-kun in this style.
Well, Voltex isn't entirely unknown, they did make Frogger 2 for Konami a little while ago. Which clearly gives them the credentials to bring an immensely popular Japanese music game to an overly-critical rabid mass of American fanboys.
I find it hilarious that Konami releases a Pop'n style game in the US with FANTASTIC music and all you people can do is bitch about how the character design is ugly. Fucking fail.

why did they even need to change the name? whats from with popn?

Maybe this theme and the name/font would've worked like 20 years ago.
Oh, and how brilliant is it that they're putting this on another console? Bah. So much for the hopes of getting a cheap but solid controller at most. :(
I quite enjoyed playing Pop'n Music on the Dualshock (at least 5 button, I have yet to get used to 9 button) and DJ Max Portable 2. It's inevitable that I will at least try the demo despite how much I object to that art style.

Do not Like at all..song list might be good but this will Turn out like another IIDX USA..Might not do well here..plus they are turning pop n into crap here..they need to keep it the same like the jp ver cause that is the best ver we all like and play same as IIDX.If another IIDX comes to the state just release like u do in jp but make it a international release like pop n music party & beatmania IIDX Empress!
p.s. keep the colors the same as pop n music! They look way better..No Change Please!
I don't find the art all that bad honestly. Its no IIDX...but its no DJMAX Fever either...
Everyone should quit crying about the art the songlist so far is solid and if enough people here and around the country purchase the game then WHO KNOWS maybe konami will try and market it here and could have time to revamp characters or bring back classic ones.
BUT HEY IVE GOT AN IDEA LETS WHINE ABOUT THE BAD ART AND SAY BAD ART=BAD GAME
I personally don't mind it though. It's not great but im not about to light myself on fire from seeing it...
The eyes remind me of old IIDX art.

Don't even THINK about getting IIDX to XBLA. NEVAR!
But everyone should just buy the game instead of the trail version, then they'll think WHOA THEY LOVE OUR GAME! Let's bring Pop'n out stateside! And let's turn down the difficulty! (bad move, the difficulty in these games is what it makes them good).

Sorry to go on a rant here but I've kind of had it up to here with this.
Why would Konami even port this? It's a treat they would even give us this, it's got a great songlist (Kitchen Battle:3) and it's on XBLA. I'm thinking with a bigger songlist (or unlocks/add-ons) and a good price, this could be well worth the money for a game to mess around with in the afternoon you know? That's what XBLA is for anyways.
And for fucks sake it looks fine and it's hilarious. It reminds me of Wario Ware and that makes me happy, 5 bucks say that's what some non-BEMANI players think when see this. Oh, and I LOVE how there's like 2, ehem, "ghetto" characters, or Hip-Hop characters, and yet you think the whole game's Seal Paul or something. And for that matter considering that's there's white and black characters so far it kind of defeats the ghetto assumption not that anything but an actual ghetto can be, in fact, GHETTO. If you want a game that's pretty BUY FUCKING POP'N MUSIC NOT LIKE YOU DON'T HAVE IT.
Get over it already, and if you are such a Pop'N weeaboo that you're going to get a heart attack over one DECENT port than you obviously have Pop'N at home so stop pissing in the ocean of insermountable piss and play your game already and be happy and have fun or something.
You need to move on. American gaming has taken on a new face and it's not hardcore music gaming. Yes, I wouldn't say that American gamers (and American music gamers) want stupid games but you know what gaming here is starting to be what gaming was imagined to be in the 70's (and almost became in the 80's) and that's games that can reach out to all audiences. I'm sorry for playing ultra-ultra-devil's-advocate here but it's a good thing your grandparents like the Wii. It's a good thing some of my friend's Mom's bought them Wii's because they wanted to play Wii Tennis. It's a good thing 13 year olds kick your ass at Halo and then go and talk to there school teachers about it. That's what gaming was meant to be, it's not some fucking club, it's not some enlightened practice, it's definitely not 1337 and for the love of God IT'S NOT A PROFESSIONAL SPORT, fatality you fucking piece of shit get a real job. It's supposed to be an entertainment medium and an art form, like music and movies before it. And now that it's finally turning into that you complain about ports not being "true to the japanese version" even though Japan's halfway across the world from the West so it shouldn't really be like the original Japanese version, I digress. If you love Pop'N THAT MUCH, show Konami you're not a bunch of elitist assholes who have abandones their US front so that they'll start making kickass music games again, because I honestly don't think Konami of America even cares about us anymore because all we do is bitch about how their games aren't like the Japanese versions so we don't buy them and we don't support them and they so "Okay, fuck it, we'll focus on the money makers, the little teeney bopper Hannah-Montana generation kids and the faux-hip-20-somethings that pay our games even though they know they suck at them. They'll really buy our shit."
Long story short: if you really do love Pop'N buy the game and support what you claim to be so diehard about.

I threw up in my mouth a little.
The only positive thing I can say about this is that they FINALLY show your score before you choose the song.

it's a 50:50 thing, they give you a US version of Pop'n, but the characters are just ugly as hell.

Although I mainly agree with the pro people, the biggest point that I like to put forward that THIS IS NOT POP'N MUSIC, this is beat n groovy, very similar games but we have all said there core differances. I love Pop'n to death and I like the look of this game due to the fact its not pop'n music and Im one of the only people to acknowledge the real reason why the characters are there!! That is to pay homage and provide nostalgia to the song you are playing! If you are playing Heidi for example on pop'n music, Mimi (i think) is wearing a heidi dress to remindpeople of the anime. Beat'n Groovy is paying homage to an art style only seen in kids shows of the 80's and 90's. I just think you guys are all spoiled by the high budget animes of today and everyone should know its never always been like this.
I also hate people bitching that they should just translate pop'n and bring it over....may I ask Why? you should already have the game and if you want jonny gamer to play it, then a direct port they would just ignore because it dosent have any songs they know and they are still using a style similar to Beat'n groovy which isnt that cool. Surely Beat n groovy is doing the same mistakes, but on XBLA they have a good chance because they essentially can try before you buy where as a back of the box situation would work against this.
If Konami did just port pop'n music to the US, then you would all complain just as much because US versions are always inferior to the JP version for the sole reasons that they would need to appeal more to jonny gamer with crap songs and a revised system. There playing it safe here and actually giving, well, people like me and jonny gamer, to buy the game, as I have ALL the pop'n games, its pointless for me to get a port.

"Ultramix 2"
Love how there is still hate for the ultramixes. And yeah Ultramixes were done by Konami of Hawaii, which was amazing.
And they had amazing songlists.
Especially 2. It was all IIDX!
And the songpacks (if you had every single one) was an amazing addition to the games.
So yeah, 2 had a horrible frame rate, w/e.
and to talk about the actual topic of this post.
Yeah, not gunna lie. It is a decent Pop'n port.
I mean. It has the music. And gameplay looks all around the same.
Soooo....we are going to pick it apart because it doesn't look EXACTLY like Pop'n?
Think they would have called it Pop'n if it was gunna be Pop'n?

I really want this game, but they're going to have to let me reconfigure the controls so I can play with the buttons on an arcade stick. Pop'n with a pad just doesn't seem like a good plan. Not to mention how awful we all know the 360 d-pad is...

As much as I hate the art, I am liking the song list so far. Therefore I will still buy it lol
Whoever says gfx doesn't matter is stupid as fuck.of course they do when introducing a new game.
This completely true. All of us know this game, we know how it plays, so we can get over the fact that the art looks like konami made a deal with the Bratz dolls
The fact is, people who ahve never heard of pop'n are going to look at this and get turned off. Unless, of course, they like the bratz dolls. So by them getting turned off, the game is going to bomb, which means our hopes of getting a Pop'n in US is going to bomb.
To be honest though, i'm ok with them not bringing Pop'n to the US officialy, as I'm perfectly fine with my imports as it stands!

what is this shit.
I died a little inside.
as well as probably 200 other people.
):
Even though it looks like shit, it's still an XBLA game which means it's 10-15 bucks max, so if it turns out to be complete feces you're not THAT hurt.
It's not like you spend 60 bucks to start going HURRRRRRRRGH KONAMI IS FUCKING US AGAIN AGH AGHA GAH

There will not be a controller. It's an XBox Live Arcade title.
Never played Pop'n. I've wanted to though.
So I'm getting this. I couldn't care less about the art.
I want it for some of those songs.
Kitchen Battle? Starmine? Fuck yes.
I find it hilarious that Konami releases a Pop'n style game in the US with FANTASTIC music and all you people can do is bitch about how the character design is ugly. Fucking fail.
1. Pop'n style =/= Pop'n. You can't play this with a Pop'n controller which takes out half the fun.
2. I don't care how amazing the songs are, 9 songs = instant fail in my book. I could just as easily get a Japanese Pop'n game and have over 100 songs, and I'm sure there will be a lot more than 9 songs out of 100 that I like.
How can Konami justify selling a product with only NINE songs!? And dammit look at their faces!! CREEPY!
All things considered, once I unlock everything on a CS version, I only end up playing the same nine songs over and over, and these ones happen to be good enough that they'd probably be those nine.
EDIT: Looking back at the pictures, I'm already sort of used to them. Yeah, the Bratz thing, but not all the characters are awful. It's probably because we're used to seeing cutesy anime characters, I can't imagine the average person hating these graphics with the firey passion you all seem to have.
Considering this is only a XBLA game and DOES NOT have a dedicated controller, I believe even with the less than attractive interface, it should still be pretty solid release. From Konami's perspective they probably figure "these noobs will hate this game on a X-box 360 controller if we incorporate all nine buttons, so lets break them in by dumbing it down and focus moreso on enjoyablity rather than difficultly." From what I'm hearing the original series started in a similar fashion. I say, support the game and maybe, just maybe, Pop'n music might get a stateside release (hopefully with the original art and name)
Sorry for the double post but I think people are failing to realize that this game is probably not going to cost more than 800MP. You get what you pay for. Nine songs isn't to shabby for a game thats suppose to be played on your mainstream gaming downtime (the purpose of the XBLA)

Sorry, but the price still doesn't add up. Assuming a PS2 CS release costs $65, at the same price per song, Beat'n Groovy would only give us about 58 songs for $65. Which is about half the songs of a Pop'n Music CS release.
I can't believe people still whine when they Americanize games. What, did you honestly expect them to cart Mimi and Nyami over? And to go farther, did you honestly expect them to hire an art director with any level of skill whatsoever for this project?
Why can't people just be happy that this EXISTS AT ALL?

Unfortunately, they did expect all that. Make anything different from the original game, and you'll have people complaining. Just can't please those fanboys (and girls)

This game is nothing like BMUS... BMUS at least kept the core of what made the original game fun. I love Pop'N, but had to give up on this after 15 minutes.
The art style is ugly but ignorable, and unlocking songs is simple (1 unlock per song finished). What kills this game is the sloppy timing windows and nonsensical note charts. The 360 D-pad is already a mushy mess, and having to alternate between left and up in rapid succession is an exercise in frustration. Left + X + B is also a fun combo to try to pull off during a rapid note chart. The lack of speed mods also makes some of the slower songs even more difficult to time than the other faster songs already are.
There's still hope, since this is obviously an early version, but right now it feels a lot like My First Music Game Port. Kitchen Battle and Beyond The Earth are made of win and awesome, but that won't be enough to save this unless it gets vastly better and soon.

They had the whole pop'n 1 cast there when pop'n 1 was brought over here to the States, no?
Anyway , It looks but I dislike the characters (good song on the songlist, too)

It's Pop'n Music minus the Pop'n :(
It just won't feel the same without the controller... or even round buttons... Why D-Pad?
I'm still gonna buy it because the songlist is awesome, and really just to support Konami in hopes of a better mix in the future.

I first clicked on this article and browsed the pictures and thought "wow, that doesn't look so good". Then I read the comments in their entirety and found that there are people much more retarded than I am. With 90-some comments behind me, I scrolled back up and looked at the same pictures again and strangely enough they don't look as bad as the first time. I want to like this, and I'll gladly buy it if it means there's even a remote chance of a new BEMANI game coming to Xbox360, but if tehgenius' comments on the gameplay continue to be true when this comes out, then I really can't see myself backing this game up....
oh my the art is horrible... I'll still give it a chance... but why don't they just create a pop'n controller for US??
Because that costs money for both Konami and consumers.
But seriously, with the combination of the weird d-pad position and shitty d-pad I can't imagine this playing any good at all. How about a PSN version instead Konami?

Good songs, good-looking music select screen, and the ability to see both the BPM of a song AND the score before playing it are nice features. But that art style....oh geez. At least the rabbit and the girl with glasses look okay...
I'd probably buy this if I had a X-BOX 360 and X-BOX live, but considering I never even bothered to get X-BOX live on the original X-BOX..

Songlist: not that bad.
Art: *facepalm*
Having to use a 360 controller: takes away some of the fun. It's like playing IIDX w/ a DuelShock.
I don't like the art and all but I don't care about that what really pisses me off is the game play 7buttons and the color change that ruined pop'n T.T
You know, I cringed for the few 10 seconds after looking at the middle picture but later on the art sorta grew on me. If there one knock against the art for this game is that it doesn't compliments PoMu's art style enough, for e.g.: the the heads on the majority of PoMu's human characters are circular, smooth, and lack detail while Groovy's seem more defined and "puffy" (as shown with Betty and Sakura in the last picture). It's a minute detail IMO but a knock all the same.
Something else I want to mention that was brought up by a poster above, this game probably isn't meant for the PoMu veterans that have the imports of PoMu already so what's your deal in complaining about Groovy? Timmy gamer might not know of the series' roots and never even heard of importing (let alone coming up with enough cash to do said importing). This game is for guys like him and hey, they may just end up liking the game enough for Konami to take notice and consider making more Groovy games (with the inevitable improvements) to whet the new fans' appetite.
So, I say to you veterans out there, just support this game to increase the American fanbase tally. Don't take the chance of better Groovy games away from the new fans.
