Dance Dance Revolution X Location Test (Tiny Update 7/18)

DDR X is on location test in Japan right now. I know we're a little bit late to the game this time around (I've been at work all night) but I'm back now and I'll try to keep this as detailed and updated as possible, just like the IIDX16 test a few weeks back.

NEW CHARACTERS
- Zero (Male)
- Bonnie (Female) 7/18 nestlekwik edit: With the Japanese DDR From Staff updated today, portraits of the two new characters now included in the post's media.
NOTES
- Standard mode is the only selectable mode at the location test.
- The Extra stage judgement is very tight. 4 steps rated Good or lower will fail you.
- To get an extra stage you must play SABER WING or a song on Random and get a AA. The difficulty you play on seems to determine what difficulty the extra stage is at.
- The difficulty rating scale has been expanded to 20. Old songs have adjusted ratings.
- Sort categories at the test consist of: ABC, DIFFICULTY, BPM, PLAYER'S BEST, TOP 30, 1ST, 2ND, 3RD, 4TH, 5TH, MAX, MAX2, EXTREME, SuperNOVA, SuperNOVA 2, DDR X
- The cabinet is an all in one design. The space on either side of the screen seem to be where the e-Amuse readers and USB ports will be installed into later. (They were not available for the location test.)
- The new monitor is a deluxe widescreen monitor, Arrows scroll in the middle leaving in an open space on the left and right outside portions of the playfield.
- "Screen Filter" option has been added allowing players to darken the area where the arrows rise so they show up better and blend less with the moving backgrounds.
- Many older songs have generic videos at the test.
- Shock arrows have been added to some songs (Flight of the phoenix is one). Stepping on one causes combo break and life decrease.
- AAA grade is obtainable at 990,000 points. Just like SupeNOVA 2
- There are no reported timing problems as of yet.

The survey is very much meant for Japanese players, but I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this once US testing starts for us. Either way, feel free to give them feedback anyways, they have an option for people who didn't attend the test. The special image download appears to only work with Japanese IPs.
H-H-H...Here we go!
So they're finally here, performing for you
If you know the words, you can join in too
Put your hands together if you want to clap
As we take you through this fun-ky rap! HUH!
This is not another cover song, one for the music, and two for the dance...OMG no ugly cover songs, Let's see the foot ratings looks promising. Finally slow songs can be rated as 10. Unless Konami made like Max 300 as an 11, and stuff, which will be kinda weird.
Yes you did, and also a 12. From Gamespot article, difficulty scale in DDR X in PS2 was changed to from 1 to 13. Appears that this applies to arcade also.
no, the difficulty scale was changed from 1-20. i'll edit the article
I saw that bag was a 14 and my first thought was "wait, I thought it only went up to 13" and my second thought was "there's no way in hell bag is a fucking 14 out of 13"
I have to say, I'm not used to combo-based extra stages and don't like having to play a certain song for it. The new ratings sound really sexy though, and I look forward to learning more about them.
WTH. DDR, ITG, and PIU all had an orgy and this is the retarded spawn it craped out. Don't get me wrong, it has huge potential. The rating system just gets to me...

unless this is a hint that there are going to be some really tough songs i dont really see the point of creating a scale up to 20 when there are only going to be a handful of songs that even go up into the 15~20s...
So far, the changes look promising. I'm glad to see the expanded difficulty and videos return for many old songs, although they are generic for now. I'm a bit disappointed to see no Challenge charts for all the new songs though.
The new foot ratings seem weird because everything is rated completely different rather than just expanding the max rating to 13.

Darwin's On The Break as extra stage = I creamed myself.
Darwin is one of my most favorite UK Hardcore producers. (Although Why Not wasn't one of his best tracks, his L'Amour remix was excellent.)

this kinda urks me i mean come on when you see numbers like 13 and up you expect to see hard songs. what im getting at is CSFIL SM is nothing of a 14 and LOM and 300 is not 15. i dunno maybe im just not giving it a chance but it just doesnt make sense to me.

Any pics of shock arrows? How EXACTLY they work? Where you can find them?

- Shock arrows have been added to some songs (Flight of the phoenix is one). Stepping on one causes combo break and life decrease.
Wait ! WHAT! Please tellme theres a way to turn off those things...right now i dont know if those will suck or be good, but i always loved the simple way of how DDR has been.
1 to 20 in foot rating? Well... i don't like very much that idea, because i thought whit max 15 was ok (also WTF Paranoia Hades its 18!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMFG I DONT WANT TO SEE 20 SONGS!!!!)
Also...
Wheres Naoki, Terra, Taka , Tash, etc??????
I like new artists but i also love the old bemani artists

ratings must go to 20 now! Yay
Posted by ceraf - Thu 07/17 2008 - 01:09 AM [ quote ]
i think i'm going to be one of the people who are gonna get really confused by the new level ratings. Yes, i did want more than 10 levels of difficulty, but I was hoping that the changes would be more gradual (like what happened with iidx). If they stuck to something similar to the ITG difficulty scale, I would feel more comfortable.
Oh well...can't always have everything. still a step in the right direction, konami. =)

well I might as well ignore this because it will probly be a year before I can play this at the arcade anywhere around here >:

We have 18 songs out of more than 60. We still have 70% of the songlist to see, so we have to be patient :P.

PHO is an 18, then PRO is a 19 and Dead End GRS is a 20.
That's probably most likely, so its not like a 20 is something we haven't seen before.

And yes for JP PS2 exclusives. Saga and malacca, awesome :D

A 20 scale sounds awfully excessive for a dance game, but hey whatever. At least they're trying something new with DDR for once.
TAG is good... but where's all the new KOs?

I can already see the arising troubles with this rating. SN2's ratings usually didn't make any sense and now they want to expand the rating. However, PHO is harder than FELMO or PRO? Still. if PRO is only a 17 I wonder what a 20 will be like.

I like everything but the shock arrows. I have a feeling that they only put one song with shock arrows in it to allow players to test it out a bit.
If enough Japanese players didn't like it, they might get rid of them

you are misreading the list. Faxx Heavy and PR Heavy are 17; PHO is 18. No one has said what the Oni ratings are for Faxx/PR yet
OTOH, see a post you don't like, don't read it. People have a right to their own opinions too ya know.
Yes, but i believe nobody here likes to see alot of not interesting/useful posts (just see how other pages are full of comments like, "wtf?" "its cool!, seeya!" "lol whut?")

Well I'm really excited for this. Let's hope there are a lot of good BEMANI crossovers.

This is really exciting for me. The new rating system seems kinda cool and fresh to me, although I am still questioning how CSFIL and Xepher Oni both equal 14. -.-
All in all, I think that I will not be disappointed with this mix.
So if DEGRS is now part of the original, does this mean they got rid of the speed changes? o.o;
Posted by Arti - Thu 07/17 2008 - 06:23 PM [ quote ]
The new rating system is something of a change, giving us a more accurate level of difficulty instead of giving us those hard 7's and 8's (Sunkiss Drop, Daikenkai, etc). I find it that its 10-level equivalent is simply dividing the new system's rating by 1.5.
eg: CTFIL(SM), a 14 on the new system /1.5 = 9.33. Close to the 9-foot rating in the old system
Sunkiss Drop, an 11 on the old system /1.5 = 7.33 -- Similar to the 7-foot rating given (nope, they still haven't thought it was harder than 8 in the old system)
Paranoia Hades/Pluto Relinquish Oni, an 18 on the old system / 1.5 = 12 -- Since we knew that they were harder than 10, and if the old 10-level system wasn't capped at 10, giving the step rating a 12 would be reasonable for these steps.
For a maximum 20 level system, it's possible to see the first ever 13's accodring to the old system (20/1.5 = 13.33). perhaps this new system is to veer off from being ITGesque from just having a 13-level system. In addition, a higher scaling system will also provide more accuracy to its difficulties.
So if DEGRS is now part of the original, does this mean they got rid of the speed changes? o.o;
Or maybe they went Pump on us and did different speeds on different difficulties... But more likely not.
I wish we still got TaQ songs...

Shock arrows? Honestly, all that sounds like is just ITG mines with a different appearance. Hopefully they continue this ITG-ish transition and give us all those songs they've been sitting on for the past few years, like Fleadh Uncut, D-Code, Energizer, et. al. Heck, Vertex^2 could be the first 20 footer.

Holy hell... Well... That ain't that bad... O_o; I don't know anymore. And I don't even know those New Songs... But good thing they are not covers, I guess.
Shock Arrows = Mines. XD If theres a option where you can turm them off, then i'll be happy.
Hooray for expanded ratings! Since I'm mainly a 9-foot player, it'll be interesting to see how my skill level compares to the new system.
complete ditto.
I wonder if the extra buttons on the cabinet are going to be used for anything more than the options screen...can't imagine what else they COULD be used for though.

Up and down are used to select songs, left and right change the sort. Still no idea what that thing in the middle of the cab is though.

Max's was a lot different in a lot of aspects, but meh, I was just really hoping for a change.
Also, is that the Happy Sky background? If that stays, this theme is going to have no continuity between screens.

Its Mei! *chuckles*
Although that could make an awesome chart now that I think of it.
They should just put in eggmans Quasar.

Cool finally a New mix..hopefully it pushes out some great song or i hate saying this but i hope they add usb stick slots so u can play your own song like in ITG & Stepmania.
well if we go to 20 foot step..like where competeing with pump...lol...i guess we are since there korean.
supernova is basically 9th mix..is supernova 2 9th in a half mix and ddr X is 10 mix? i guess.
there is no place to complain about this mix until u play it and give it a try..when it comes here..HopeFully we get Amusement Cards with this mix..would be nice for america to get for once.
They own the intellectual rights to (and therefore all of) In The Groove, due to that lawsuit a few years back. Roxor has virtually no chance of getting it back, as they had to agree to both give up the rights and respect Konami's ownership of ITG. My feeling is that Konami just couldn't stand a competitor who had a superior product, so used a minute detail (which would have been resolved anyways) to destroy the competition. Seems somewhat like a monopoly. Many fans want ITG2 on the PS2, and even ITG3 for the arcade.
I'd prefer not to have an argument about this, because I simply won't respond.

Why do you hate to say that? R21 was one of the best things ever to happen to arcade dance cabinets. Without it, I never would have played some of ITG3, or even some homebrew files. Even though it won't happen, it would still be nice to see something like that on a DDR cabinet.
stevenlarue, what piepiepie75 was refering to is the fact that, although Konami owns the intellectual properties of itg now, that doesn't mean they own the rights to the music created for the game. Consider that PUMP Pro has several old itg songs on it. Seeing itg songs in a DDR game is simply never going to happen, because Konami doesn't own them, and they most likely wouldn't care to pay the licensing fees to use them either.

The moment Konami does update this system, they're ripping off something.
Can you please just decide if Konami should keep it the same or update things? Please?
You win the thread.
When DDR was in the SuperNOVA stages, even before, you guys were all like OMG ITG is so much better and DDR is too easy and a bunch of other stuff. But when DDR X details are announced all of a sudden you guys are saying NO we don't want ITG mines and difficulty in our DDR!!! Which is completely opposite to how you guys were acting before. I'll never understand...

^ Yes
Yes, but don't be surprised to see some of ITG's licensed songs to appear in a future DDR mix (hello Spacekats)
wolfman, piepie: thanks. I was a bit confused. I had completely disregarded the fact that Kyle Ward now works for the PIU production team, and that Konami really doesn't have anything to do with the artists. My original comment was simply pointing out that they're now implementing more ITG-like game mechanics, so the chance of SOME songs appearing is more than 0.
And to reiterate, I would love to see R21 (and of course never will) on a DDR cabinet. I just hope that the local arcades keep their ITG2 cabinets.
One more thing: I almost had the chance to be at the test location! I was in Tokyo last weekend, but am back in/near Nagoya (and don't really feel like purchasing another Shinkansen ticket). So, like the rest of you, I'll be waiting. I should have just postponed my trip to this weekend. Grr.
Hmmm once again a PS2 release goes along side an arcade release.... I'm sorry but it just boggles me how there's no DDR Universe machine or something like that... It's like... a totally different game... well it's the same game but you know.
A Universe AC game would make Konami pay a lot of money for licensing.

Because Konami America has no control over KOJ's Arcade Division.

Good luck finding ITG players in Japan, since there are, literally, no machines there.
There was one video on Youtube of a ITG machine (well, a SN2 machine with ITG2 in it) in Japan, but it was deleted by the person who uploaded it for reasons he did not state.

I have a feeling those DDR 20-footers won't be ITG 20-blockers.
And if they are, they're most likely going to cram a real 20-foot chart to a song with the same style as before and it's going to be a heck of a mess. Imagine random 16th whatever's at 325 BPM, and a 16th stream with crossovers at the end of the song (Paranoias suck).

Oh, and also, if PSMO is 17 with the same chart as before there's most likely going to be no real hard songs.
We'll see, though, so don't murder me if I'm wrong. I just can't expect that much from Konami...
