You are given the ability to choose:
- Songs
Currently only 8 default Konami official songs are available, hopefully because the editor is still in beta.
- Style
Single or Doubles
- Difficulty
Basic through Challenge
- Official Chart
Allows you to edit the official chart or upload an existing edit .DAT
From there the editor downloads the song and loads the step chart. This is the slowest part of the process as it takes an awfully long time to load. The data is not cached so you'll have to wait for the loading regardless if you have loaded the same song before.
The rest of the program is fairly straight forward. Zooming into the chart allows you to add pink 4ths, blue 8ths, yellow 16ths and green Freezes by clicking or dragging. Options for previewing parts of the chart and adding comments which show up as info bubbles on the song wheel are also provided.
Saving charts will create a file called DDR_EDIT_U.DAT which is to be placed in the folder DDR_EDIT in the root directory of your USB drive. Presumably any existing edit files from other X AC versions will need to be renamed from J to U or A to U.
Errors display with the faulty measure such as more than 3 arrows on one line appear only after clicking save.
I'm a bit worried about licenses as this is a free to use tool and providing licensed songs through such a service may have limitations. Anyways, now all someone has to do is think up a decent way of sharing these edits when all the file names must be the same. ;p
At least we won't have to worry about syncing!

I haven't played DDR in years, and I've got to say -- This is incredibly cool of Konami to provide something so bloody official like this. Kudos, guys.

While it is a step in the right direction, the editor could be a little more useful. There isn't a way to play certain parts of the chart and test out the pattern to see if theyre in the right place.
Yeah its beta, but it should be looked at in the future
EDIT: or maybe it never loaded for me. disreguard this post. the program could move a lot smoother though.

Sweet, but nothing new stepmania users have had for years.

Wow.
You realize DDR edits for the arcade have existed since '99, right?

Runs super slow and clunky for me. An actual program that you can download to your computer would be waaaaaaay more efficient seeing as this really only caters to people that have awesome internet connections.
Now, what I don't understand is why we can't import edits from the PS2 versions like other regions (Japan) can do?

So far, it's very rudimentary at best, but I'm missing the fact that it has no assist tick, since I can't really hear the current beat of the arrow that I'm mapping at all, so I have to rely heavily on the music itself, so if Konami's folks are reading this, you got some more work to do.

They should just all out model the interface on Stepmania.
I know, I know, "DDR != Stepmania," but when I make charts, I like to take lots of liberties. Stretch jumps, hands, etc. tend to be more than frequent for me when I'm making doubles charts. Plus, I'm not sure what part of the interface prevents the addition of 12ths, 24ths, 32nds, and 64ths, but if that can be overcome, it would give the charter a lot more freedom. Still, this is a step in the right direction, and I appreciate that Konami has given into customization.
This is an edit file exported from DDR X JP CS. I've changed the file name, but you need to create a folder called "DDR_EDIT" in the root of your USB and put this file in it.
I would just like to know if it's possible to use DDR X JP CS to get edits on the machine as well.

Since so few machines in the past had the ability to let you use edit steps, I wouldn't be surprised to see some people act like this is something new.

Every machine has had the ability (save SN1 and 2), it's just a question of having the hardware to do it.
Even so, Stepmania is far beyond the first actual DDR simulator. I'm sure we can name plenty of other DDR simulators with the ability to write your own custom stepchart to your own favorite song.
