DJ MAX TECHNIKA Location Test Report and Videos!
Posted by Loserbait - Fri 08/15 2008 - 03:46 PM - 1629 Views

Davyn writes: Today (8/15) there was a test location for the new music game DJ MAX TECHNIKA at Isu Themepark, in Seoul, South Korea. I was lucky enough to stop by to try it out myself.

DJ MAX TECHNIKA is a new arcade exclusive rhythm game developed and published by Pentavision in cooperation with the former EZ2DJ team. The game is played with a touchscreen in a similar fashion to the titles in the "Ouendan" series. The screen is split into two sections horizontally. The notes appear on one half of the screen and remain stationary, while a "timing bar" scrolls across the screen from the left side. When the bar passes a note, you tap the note itself. When the bar reaches the end of the screen, it reappears on the bottom half of the screen scrolling from the right side.

-The cabinet has two monitors. One is above the player facing out for spectator viewing, and the lower is at about waist level and slightly tilted. This is the touch screen. The top screen looks like it's probably plasma and is much larger than the lower screen. Both screens are 16:9 and the game runs in proper widescreen.
-Single player only.
-The screen is NOT multitouch. There is even a warning screen after beginning your credit to remind you that you can only touch one place at a time.
-Three game modes. Cute Mixing, a type of beginner's mode, Professional Mixing, regular three stage mode, and Techinal Mixing, which is a four song course mode, with custom courses available.
-Card reader built into the machine. Not in use during this test.
-There were four note types in the test version. Regular notes requiring one tap, long notes requiring you to keep your finger in place for the duration of the note trail, slide notes requiring you to move your finger along the path of the note (they're straight, diagonal, or sometimes a wavy line), and repeating notes requiring you to keep tapping the note according to the timing bars on the note trail. Each note type has it's own color.
-The overall interface has a pink and black theme with very smooth graphics and animation. The menu backgrounds have a lot of nice particle effects. All graphics are extremely vibrant and sharp.
-Machine is mostly silver colored metal similar to EZ2DJ or IIDX machines. There is also a small metal stage to stand on similar to IIDX machines.
-The area around the touch screen is a clear plastic panel with various colored lights that illuminate it during play.
-Three "effectors" available to alter the sound. I can only remember two now; Bass boost and Treble boost.

Overall it's a very fun game and I'm excited to play the full release later. It's very refreshing to see a new type of music game in the arcade sector. Unfortunately no photos were allowed during this test so I can't provide any media.

Classic DJ Max = Konami will sue. I didn't want to have to say that, but that's seriously what would happen.

I kinda hope multi touch would be featured. More difficulty, "doubles play", 2P mode.
But stil even if it isnt the classic DjMax we know and love, it still looks pretty cool. The non "Dj" Style game play, isn't that much of a problem to me. But I wish they would put more use to the second screen.

Okay, here's a basic representation of the gameplay and cabinet from what I could pick out of the article. Obviously the notes aren't necessarily circles and the cabinet probably won't be nearly as ugly, but you get the point. And I'm sorry it's so terrible - I'm in the middle of a move right now, and the PC + tablet are packed away. Bawwww.

The Crowing's Crappy Technika Mock-Up

I'm assuming that the top screen is going to be used either to show the actual gameplay, the notes a-splodin', a BG video of some sort, or some combination of the three. The reason there's a top screen is because the bottom screen is positioned in such a way that the only person who can really see it is the player himself.

Edit: And then I realize that there's a link with gameplay images/video. I'M SO SMART.

Oh wow, that does look pretty fun. Too bad it's not multitouch, that'd make it pretty awesome.

There needs to be multitouch on that shit.

It'd be so awesome.

EDIT: You know, what this game could really use is HAPTICS.

I realize there is a small chance you were joking, so instead of saying that you are wrong, I am going to commiserate about how the DS touchscreen is so small this wouldn't work; no CS for us probably : (

they really could have made the game even more interesting with multiple notes....but maybe that's a technical issue. or they were just lazy.
