RUMOR: Guitar Hero "Arcade" a Little Less Rumory
Posted by nestlekwik - Sun 11/16 2008 - 12:04 AM - 7623 Views
Allegedly, sometime very soon, "arcade" Guitar Hero will no longer be relegated to fan-made setups such as the one pictured to the right - no, if these rumors pan out, you'll be shredding alongside a friend via your local arcade location.
Back at the beginning of October, rumors started circulating that Activision-Blizzard's Guitar Hero series would be hitting the arcade scene thanks to the development efforts of Raw Thrills. Today, a very reliable source has told Bemanistyle.com exclusively that this is indeed 100% true and the cabinet is slated to make its grand unveiling at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions exhibit in Orlando, Florida, beginning this Tuesday.
While Raw Thrills is reportedly handling all of the development and engineering, perhaps the most startling news of all is the development that the cabinet will be published by Konami, of all companies, which, if you're a regular on the site, you should know as the publisher and developer of the long-running Guitar Freaks series (among other things). So far, our source has stated the cabinet is going to feature 8-10 speakers, more than 500 LED lights and a 32" monitor. The cabinet is also reportedly slated to take advantage of Internet connections to provide online cash tournaments sometime starting in 2009.
We're still labeling this as rumor until we see for ourselves on Tuesday, but, believe me when I say this is a very reliable source. Once it's unveiled, however, hopefully, along with new arcade machines from Konami and PM Studios, the U.S. arcade scene will get the kick in the pants it needs to rejuvenate a little.
Edit: I've been talking to Arcade Heroes, which picked up on our story, and with the site's knowledge of the IAAPA event and the arcade industry, here are the tidbits they had to add:
"Tiny update: While I tried to get some confirmation on this, all I could find out is that Konami is going to be at the Betson booth, which is why they are not on the IAAPA map. Raw Thrills also shares the Betson booth so the union on Guitar Hero would be pretty easy to handle. That and our friend Editor in the comments below confirms it so now we just are waiting for the pics and video."
The Editor comment referenced in the above quote:
"Yay - we can talk about it now the news has broken - yep, Konami owns the rights to the technology for AC application so they worked with Activision and Raw Thrills. More big news about Konami expected soon."
If you're wondering, Andamiro is supposed to be at the event as well, so we're hoping to pull Guitar Hero, DDR X, Pump It Up, American Idol (another Raw Thrills production) media and anything else music oriented that might be at the event. Nothing is confirmed in the way of what will physically be at the show, but Arcade Heroes has a nice prediction piece up for the event.

Well at least this will put a stop to the ghetto-rigged machines I've been seeing at the boardwalks, where people are paying a dollar to basically use somebody's x-box. Seemed pretty illegal to me.

The 5-key Beatmania machines have 10 on them. (4 on top, 4 right in front of the keys and 2 underneath)
The more I think about this the more hilarious this is
Konami made Guitar Freaks, which was likely inspiration for Guitar Hero, then liscences patents out for Guitar Hero, then made Rock Revolution for the lulz, then publishes Guitar Hero AC.
oh guitar games

Hm, I think the average GH fan is gonna say - "Why waste my money on that when I can play at home..." Unless they really will have Arcade money tournaments.

good job konami
Apparently Konami doesn't think Guitar Hero is a rip-off anymore.
Keep riding the money train, Konami. As long as your half-assed DDR CS versions sell in the US as much as you expect, you don't need to improve the quality or anything. And if you didn't try a larger scale attempt at popularizing GF/DM, then now's the time to get however many dollars you can out of a series that you let live, then ripped off of yourself with Rock Revolution, then realized that it was too late to try and topple.

I guess we could still hope for just Drummania now... until Rock Band arcade comes out anyway.

Since when was Blizzard working on GH? I also see Konami has given up on bringing GF/DM statewide (although I guess their experimenting with the downloadable tracks in Rock Revolution).
It never has. It just publishes it now. Activision and Blizzard have long since merged and the entity of Activision-Blizzard is what publishes Guitar Hero now.

Konami's just going to take the money from the patent licenses and run with it. They know they can't win in the US, so why not let someone else do it who can? They (Konami) are getting money anyway.
Everyone here thinks this is an amazingly bad idea because it's not GF/DM but you have to realize that the US arcade scene needs something that already has been established in people's homes, to get them OUT of those homes and into the arcades.
The model's been flipped completely. Before the arcade sales translated into CS blockbusters; now it looks like they're trying to go the other way. More power to them. If it make arcades more successful, then I think it's worth a shot.

Drummania wont ever make it into arcades in the US (legally)
because the "Drum Simulation" patent for arcade systems is already taken
and they will get sued if they bring it to the US
Guitar freaks is more likely, but since it is bundled with Drummania, most likely no
And besides, nobody will play that "guitar hero rip-off" once Guitar hero arcade comes out.
(Comment does not imply that i am a guitar hero-cult member. I hate guitar hero, but as much as i like guitar freaks, it is unlikely to ever sell here)
Imagine a set of three songs with an average of 5 minutes = LONG QUEUES, DAMMIT!!!
More like 1 song per session, if we're going by the established GFDM standard of long version songs

The patent that MTV owns on "drum simulation patent" doesn't impede on Konami at all for 2 reasons. First, the patent MTV owns isn't for a game, it's for a simulation featuring crowd response, lights, etc. Konami can get around all of that by how drummania is setup (they did test V4 over here, remember?). And second, MTV isn't using that patent AT ALL, Konami could easily just pay the licensing on it if they felt there was profit potential in the release of the game. RedOctane has been paying Konami licensing fees for Guitar Hero since it's inception, and they're a much smaller company.
I would say something, but I think you all have said everything that needs to be said. This speaks for itself...

I... I think I'm okay with this. Hell, I'd be cool with Konami sneaking in some Konami originals as bonuses. Still wish Drummania would get a stateside release though. Oh well.

This makes me want to stab a baby in the face. Not just because I don't like Guitar Hero either. It's bringing mainstream marketing into my last bastion of nerditude, my home away from home, and that just annoys the hell out of me. [Insert long nerdy tirade here]

Haha, I can see what you're getting at. I'd be pissed as well.

I love how 97% of all GH and RB related news bits get wayy more negative ratings.

I think what he was trying to get at was that if Guitar Hero AC were to release, it would compete with Technika; and because DJ Max a less recognized name, Technika may not sell versus the brand that is Guitar Hero.
On the other hand, he makes it sound like an absolutely lost cause. For the record, I certainly don't think that's the case.

Guitar Hero arcade aside, do you think arcades are going to be any more or less willing to buy Technika, seeing as how it's a new title and 99% of arcade owners will have no idea what it is? I don't think Guitar Hero's release is going to hurt or help technika, if an arcade sees any potential to earn money from technika they'll buy it regardless of another game being released or not. Arcades buy several machines at a time pretty frequently, and the target audience for both titles are places like gameworks, dave & busters, etc. where they have expendable income for new titles.

And?
That's probably because 4/5 Guitar Hero games announced these days are just milking the franchise.

If GH AC is actually successful at the arcades imo it would only give operators more incentive to buy more music games..

GF is such a game that it only appeals to a very niche line of hardcore gamers. If GH AC at my local arcade earns well and brings in hardcore fans, pitching the idea to the arcade of.. bringing in GF/DM would appeal to the types of players coming in.. could give them more incentive to buy imo. Even if GH had never been created, GF/DM would still only do well at few arcades. If GH AC can bring in hardcore fans of the genre to the arcade, buying GF/DM could appeal to the same players and earn enough for it to be worth buying.

GH has done so well on the console market that it has the potential to do very well for the arcade market and possibly get it out of the slump that its in. I would rather see some mainstream games in my arcade to keep the place alive than have it continue down the path its going now with out them.

why?
I'm not a big GH fan and I hardly ever play it, but I love music games and I can only imagine that if one arcade music game can be very successful it could show operators other music games could be worth purchasing.

Oh God not mainstream marketing! Whatever will you do when confronted with THE REAL WORLD. Please explain your logic (same goes for the people who agreed with you). You act as if the people that would be drawn in by this will somehow interfere with your enjoyment of the games you go to the arcade for. If you don't like it, don't play it. Simple as that.

I hate it when the term Hardcore gamer is used, too egotistical, but then again the only reason I wouldn't be touching GH: AC for more than a few minutes a month IS because 90% of it's charts bore me to tears.
Then again unlike the home versions I doubt GH: AC will force you to play through every horrible song to get to the difficult one's.
5-star the difficult songs and then leave it back to GF, most likely.
This is only my opinion either way, so It's not particularly "debatable"
Not like the, you know, INFORMED music gamers, but the average GH player that thinks they're the god of music gaming and know nothing about music games other than DDR and asians.
this eliminates all possibilities of gfdm in the americas
Unless they make GH AC to GF/DM upgrade kits...
Hahahahaha, that would be downright awesome if that was Konami's secret grand scheme behind all of this GH AC crap!
I'd be PISSED if the manager at my arcade decided to buy a Guitar Hero machine (God forbid) after I've been begging him to get a beatmaniaIIDX machine since the motherfucking 'GOLD RUSH'. If this GH AC shit becomes official and Konami charges around $15,000 USD for the machine, I'm going to hold a gun to his head and say "order it, then you die!".
