A demonstration of the new keyboard controller for Rock Band 3 has been shown on USA Today's Game Hunters. Harmonix developers were there to help explain many new features along with the interesting way they've handled displaying so many keys with the new full 25 key keyboard which also has a strap and touch based handled for keytar action.
Harmomix devs have created a layout which makes it easier for the player to keep their fingers in the right section by splitting the the sections of the keyboard and limiting those sections for the easier difficulty levels. Also to utilize screen space the note field will shift from side to side as the notes move across the keyboard.
"we're actually utilizing the full two-octave range that the keyboard controller has. Everything that you are playing, whether you are playing on easy or expert, is accurate musical information. The track looks like a real keyboard track, and you are playing notes on the keyboard that if you were to step away from the game and were to play on a real piano, they would be the right notes." - Daniel Sussman /Harmonix
With Keyboardmania from Konami, for example all the notes are displayed on the screen with very little indicators to help keep your fingers in right the spot making KBM quite difficult as your fingers tend to get lost.

Well, there goes a bit of every paycheck until this comes out - I don't even want to think about how much this is going to cost at the moment because I'm still floored by all the stuff they were able to work in.
If Depeche Mode, the Pet Shop Boys, Billy Joel, Elton John or, hell, even Mika (actually, "Grace Kelly" would probably be abnormally fun...) show up, I'll be beside myself.
I like what I see so far. Good call on the colored sections for guidance, and I like the clever way of fitting all the lanes in via scrolling. The old Queen DLC had better get a proper update to include this.
Also hoping to see the debut of some ELO and ELP in this one. Karn Evil 9 glsjkdfaf
Well, damn. I haven't been excited for a music game since... The first Rock Band. Putting Metric in makes it a must-buy for me anyway. Too bad they didn't put in one of their songs with a synth part :\
