Konami DDR Nationals Texas Regional Update
Posted by kent - Tue 09/29 2009 - 09:26 AM - 2845 Views

The Konami DDR Regional kicked off in Texas last Saturday where no reported problems occurred throughout the event. An estimated 20 competitors were present.

TOP 4

  1. EvilDave
  2. ZachATTACK!!
  3. Garret
  4. Chance

Thanks to ZachATTACK!! for the info and media!

"HUGE POST ALERT!!!

Ok, tournament went great. Was a lot of fun.

Dave: it was nice to finally get to play against you lol
Ryan: it was nice to finally meet you.
Everyone else: It was fun. A lot of you are really cool. Fuddruckers was great. Gonna try Buffalo instead of Ostrich next time.

Garret, (3rd place) was most assuredly the underdog of the tournament. Nearly beat Dave and (had I seeded anything but 2nd) would most definitely haven't beaten me.

Pads were great (and these pads last month were pretty shitty) and while there were some pad errors, the amount was small and the difference in score should they have been recalc'd was negligible.

As for the tournament itself:

REGISTRATION

Opened with a rickroll. By me. It was awesome.

SEEDING

Qualifiers are determined by a wheel of fortune type wheel (players are grouped by song).

Nobody picked Brazilian Anthem for their qualifier, which was funny cause it was the first song picked.

Dave seeded first, I seeded 2nd (we were the only two to FPC our song. I think there may have been a couple other AAA's, but I'm not 100%)

I can't remember the rest of the order off the top of my head...sorry.

One girl played in combat boots and failed the qualifier. Everyone else passed.

Top 16 scores moved on.

For single song elimination (until final 4 it was done this way), a different set of songs was put onto the wheel of fortune thing.

Dave beat my friend Darious (Chocl8 Surprise), who was lowest seed, and Chikara.

Codi lost to Garret...I think....(I know he did for sure, but it might have been in the next round)

Mark (Milk) lost to AJ (Dedearmon/Pushmata)

Andrew (scythe) won against somebody on Maximizer.

Don't remember the rest.

8 moved on (Dave, Me, AJ, Andrew, Garret, Chance, Ed, and forgot)

For the next round, songs were still out of the previous, but you were about to pick. I think at this point, its still single elim using the songs from the wheel of fortune thing from the previous round HOWEVER, higher seed got to choose this time.

Dave beats Ed. One notable match here was VERY close. Literally a difference of 10 points. One great hurts that much on SN2.

I beat Andrew on Maximzier.

Chance or Garret beats AJ (can't remember which) on Red Zone. Very "800$ Boom"ish. Aj is partially drunk by this point, and is winning the match until the hold note toward the middle of the song. At this point AJ thinks the song is over and picks up about 4 or so misses. AJ loses lol.

Garret beats Codi now if he didn't earlier lol (I really did forget)

FINAL 4 begins

5 song list is available: Brilliant Red, Xepher, AA, Drivin, and No. 13.

Dave plays garret and nearly loses. Garret truly was the underdog of this tournament.

I played Chance. Though I was higher seed, I let him pick.

he picked AA...which I'd never played before.

He wins.

I pick Drivin and win (though I thought I lost)

Next two songs were Brilliant Red and No. 13. We each won one but I can't remember which one which of us won (I'll check my videos later).

Tiebreaker was Xepher. I almost pull a Soul and nearly walk off after picking up about 4 greats in easy areas at the very end of the song, but decide to finish it to find out I won. (which was a surprise honestly).

For finals, all songs from Extreme and Supernova were open.

Garret and Chance face off. Garret wins. Chance gets 4th. Garret gets 3rd.

Dave and I go for 1st and 2nd respectively. Dave picks Bag...99x,xxx vs a 93x,xxx. (I suck at Bag if it wasn't obvious).

I pick Leading Cyber...and lose by about 3 greats (I'm usually pretty good at Leading Cyber though). Dave - 991,xxx
Me - 990,xxx

Dave picks Maxx Unlimited.

Dave AAA's it. I AA it.

Tournament ends.

Dave gets $150 gift card to Gameworks and trip to Vegas in December.

I get $100 gift card to Gameworks and 1/7th chance of a trip to gameworks
(DUK: how is that going to work btw, since my seed was on a SN2 whereas everyone elses will be on Supernova? I'm assuming since I FPC'd Happy Angel I'd just go down as a 100,000 for the AAA?)

Garret got a $75 gameworks giftcard.

Chance got a $50 gameworks giftcard.

5th-16th got $10 gifcards.

Oh, top 4 gets trophies as well.

FINAL WORDS:
The tournament, while odd in how it was done, was done very well.

Being my first OFFICIAL tournament (the other two being among friends who I play with all the time), I was nervous, which lead to a terrible performance on my part (Garret would have beaten me HANDS down had I not seeded 2nd). I noticed that as I relaxed my MA was better.

I went in wanting to have fun, but take it seriously enough to do well.

I got exactly what I went in with. The tournament was a great.

ZzeezZ:
"oh i definitely see 16+ of the 60 to 80 ohio players AAAing their qualifier"

Kalek:
"while i don't see it happening either, ohio and surrounding states do have a lot more good players than texas does."

Partially because Texas is HUGE. Pretty much everybody who showed up were locals to Grapevine (a couple from houston, and 1 from Mcallen).

Another thing, is that the tournament came on very short notice; a lot of good players (Fakr, mapo, LUBBOCK etc.) could not make it because of this in addition to the fact that the expectations for this tournament are questionable, given konami's recent actions such as DDR X and such.

However, should this tournament be successful, this SHOULD end up being an annual thing. With such a chance for DDR to be fairly successful again, I say we as a community should relish this opportunity and enjoy this as much as we can.

-ZachATTACK!!

PS
Hottest Party 3 for the wii is being demoed with the balance board mode at each tournament (Never Gonna Give You Up is on there; which is how I rickrolled the registration line)."

videos on youtube.

Rating: 6 Positive | 3 Negative

while I was very skeptical of tournament, I'm glad to see it went very well! Congrats Dave, I hope we get similar coverage from the other tournaments and the finals.

This made me laugh much harder than I had anticipated, even though it's probably not the person I'm thinking of. xD

Unfortunately I had no money to go up and try out, not to mention I'm TERRIBLE at Nova 2.

while I don't check BMS that often, just wanted to say thanks guys! Tourney was pretty fun, and everyone who came out to it (and even the people who didn't come out to it who were there on Friday) were pretty badass!

Sounds like it was just about as much as I expected. Glad everyone had fun there but it sounds like it could have made it more. Yeah obviously the biggest problem is advance notice.
