Dhani Harrison, who was one of the driving factors behind getting the Beatles: Rock Band made, is apparently now a consultant for Harmonix and MTV Games. He’s on tour with his band, thenewno2, and opening for Wolfmother, but he had a chance to interview with the Chicago Tribune, and this is what he had to say:
“I’m working on ‘Rock Band 3′ and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game… Give me a couple years, it’s going to happen.”
The Boston Herald also managed to get some minor info out of Dhani regarding Rock Band 3:
Now Harrison is working on “Rock Band 3” to make it even more realistic. His goal: to get the game to actually teach people to play music, not just to pantomime in rhythm.
I assumed there would be some sort of progression in terms of gameplay from Rock Band 2 to Rock Band 3, but new, realistic peripherals that will actually allow you to learn how to play real music is a pretty significant jump in gameplay!

Hm... I'm curious about what they mean with this. Obviously, drums are the easiest to make "more realistic" (they could, you know, USE that velocity sensitivity on the pads), but what about the other instruments? To make vocals more realistic, they'd have to introduce a Lips-style scoring of vocal quality. As proven by RB1's talky sections, that's a tricky thing to program properly. And the guitar/bass things... are they going to implement different strings to go with the buttons? If so... how? It's kind of a big jump, so I'm curious what they're got planned.
Also, I REALLY hope that the DLC is still compatible with this new setup!

I don't see any way to do this without a radical hardware revision that would really irritate earlier adopters. I wouldn't really care, so long as the whole game remains accessible to those with older controllers, but some folks might.
I'd kill for the ability to adjust speed mods in the post-song-selection menu (when selecting difficulty) so you can have different speeds going during score duel.
I Think with DLC, we dont even need RB3. The only reason why we would is if they where to add Keyboard in (pplleeeeeeaaasee?)
I would love a keyboard. I would like a RB3 though. Some graphics updates and expanded instruments would be awesome.
And harmonized vocals! Seriously, Man In The Box (among others) just don't feel complete without a secondary vocal line.
At least this seems reasonable since they've already done it in the Beatles game. I think that we could probably expect harmonized vocals in the next game.
I'm not really sure how you could fit all the visual cues for a keyboard without having to put it on a separate display or something though, unless you just do it lead sheet style for people who already play piano/keyboard well, and in that case what's the point?
I'm going to assume you already know about the Breakneck Speed option and are wanting multiple level speed mods.
This would be too awesome. That's one thing I always thought Konami had over these games. that and IIDX's scoring system. [EDIT] But speed mods could probably be DLC...and most RB players dont want the scoring to change so I can see that noy happening (sad face)

It'll have to have it's own display. Your right about the screen being a bit overcrowded, tho. Maybe ditch bass? (Or at least have it only as an option for Guitar like in GF)....I'm sure Harmonix could make it work out.
Why the hell don't they just make a box so we can plug in REAL guitars and microphones and electronic drum sets?

A multi-million dollar idea (don't let someone else take it! :P)
But all I realllly want is a fucking drum set with more pads/more realistic setup a la drummania. Or maybe they will really surprise us and get a full setup like drummania XG.

all i really want out of the engine is back up singing, multiple of the same instrument, keyboard, and fixing the scroll speeds(i dont know if you guys noticed, but if one player is on medium, everyone's scroll speed is the medium scroll speed, which is slow as shit).
keep it 4 player, let you make any set up for your band that you want. aside from that, they do a great job picking music so i wont bother chiming in on that. just a few engine tweaks is all i need(keyboard would just be nice, it isnt required to sell me).
I was thinking they could have a progression of difficulty which goes beyond the simple, easy, medium, hard, etc. Instead of just going through those difficulties in linear fashion, they could instead have, say, for a guitar, each difficulty with a certain amount of "strings". For instance, Easy, 1 string, 2 string, 3 strings etc, and have this which each difficulty. Mind you, there can still be "classic" mode where no matter what "string" you press you will still register.
I don't know though whether it be a good idea to stick with gummy buttons (as each fret, up to 5 or even more), with each fret having 6 buttons, or having some kind of string to use (aka a semi-real guitar).
To me, this would be pretty cool indeed. Charts would take forever to make though
