We've taken a look at The Royalty Network before as it revealed a new Lips game before Microsoft even spoke of it. The site and service keeps tabs on licensing usage requests for its registered members, made by companies, whether it be for video games, movies, television shows, etc. With January 2010 results posted in its archives, we've been able to notice a couple of interesting requests.
Readers should keep in mind these are merely requests and do not guarantee usage, so please understand this information hardly confirms anything. The most interesting is the final request on the page, detailing Harmonix Music Systems requesting licenses for four songs:
“Ante Up” by M.O.P.(Grinnage/Murry/Pittman) administered on behalf of Blind Man’s Bluff Music (ASCAP)
“Evacuate the Dancefloor” by Cascada (Eshuijs/Reuter/Peifer/Reuter) Sub-published on behalf of Talpa Music (ASCAP)
“Say Aah” by Trey Songz(Ferebee/Neverson/Scales/Walker) Published on behalf of Skelatune Muzik (BMI)/ Tenyor Music (BMI)
”The Way I Are” by Timbaland feat D.O.E. (Hills/Hilson/Maultsby/Mosley/Bale’Wa/Mosley /Muhammad /Nelson) administered on behalf of Jerry Lee (ASCAP)
You may notice these songs are far from a fit for Rock Band, so it just begs the question why the company would looking to use such tunes. Will the company follow the trend and get into the DJ mix? Is it maybe considering an Amplitude/Frequency relaunch? Would these just be really absurd Rock Band tracks? Is someone at Harmonix having fun at our expense? It's hard to say at the moment, but I have a feeling if Harmonix is looking at a new project, its lips are going to be sealed for the time being.
Also on the January list, a mention of DJ Hero 2 pops up, having Activision requesting the dance hit "I Will be Here" by Tiesto as remixed by Benny Benassi. Activision hasn't been very shy about the existence of the title, but details have been mum so far. We're definitely keeping our eyes and ears open for when details finally arise on this sequel.
