Warner Music to GH, RB: NOT RICH ENOUGH
Posted by LAMBORGHINI FCUKER - Thu 08/07 2008 - 12:16 PM - 1440 Views

All the money Warner Music is making from the not-cash cows that Guitar Hero and Rock Band are apparently just a tiny droplet in the cash sink. Have some comedy gold from WMG chief Edgar Bronfman:

Quote:
"The amount being paid to the music industry, even though their games are entirely dependent on the content we own and control, is far too small,"
Quote:
"Unless there is a real partnership among game marketers and artists and labels, WMG will be hesitant about going further to license its music for video games."
Yes Mr. Bronfman, let's give Activision and Harmonix (and Konami) further incentives to look into other avenues to bypass you.

AC/DC, Avenged Sevenfold, The B-52's, Bad Company, The Cars, Disturbed, The Eagles, Garbage, Jane's Addiction, Jet, Metallica, Alanis Morissette, Mötley Crüe, My Chemical Romance, Muse, Panic at the Disco, Pixies, Radiohead, The Ramones, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Sex Pistols, Van Halen are all signed to Warner. Correct me if i'm wrong but that seems like a good chunk out of the RB and GH lineups. If I couldn't chalk this up to greed I would give it a big WTF!

Not like Warner's the only label out there to license music for games.

Without releasing specifics, I'm not convinced.

That being said, they can do what they want. I don't care if there's a Music Artist Hero coming out or not depending on their company's disposition.

It's completely predictable that a music label would look at the few million dollars that they got from licensing music to GH/RB, compare it to the hundreds of millions that the series is making, then decide to complain about it.
CAPITALISM~

It's not like Warner's losing money off this deal. It may only be earning them "a drop in the bucket", but it's still a couple million more dollars than they'd have otherwise.

If they drop, what do Harmonix and Activision do? They pay a smaller fee to get the rights for the song, record a cover, and keep all the profits off that downloaded track. Warner loses the deal.

It's understandable that they'd want MORE money out of it, given the profile of the games, but still... whining won't get them very far.

I don'tknow maybe not but I've nnot yet seen news like this with Konami or Q? so who knows... but seeing how America is... I'm sure it happens a bit more.

I'm not a real fan of GH/RB but this just annoys. Darn greedy boxes.

If I'm a rockband and want my stuff on there and then my label (DGM) says no we are no longer doing that) I'll find a way, make some songs just for the game and that would be it.... gee I should've payed more attention in music business class.
